My Westie has itchy, bleeding skin bumps. Is it dog skin cancer?

It looks like Hamish may have a mild skin infection. The black spots could be scabs or hyperpigmentation, which can happen with any inflammation. Westies have a tendency to have allergies so if he has been scratching at all it could have caused some traumatic that area. If it's not getting better I would have him checked out by your vet to see if he would benefit from any medication. Good luck!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly due to an underlying allergy predisposing him to fungal infections. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Hello, sorry to hear about Pickles. It is likely an exacerbation of his skin allergies. Common skin cancers present with either a mass, a bleeding ulcer, and they typically are too excessively itchy. It would be more likely that this is just another sign of his itchy skin and he needs to be managed with his ongoing diet trial as well as anti-itch medications and antibiotics for secondary skin infections. If Pickles continues to have some itchiness, then speak with your veterinarian about obtaining anti-allergy medications such as Apoquel or Atopica. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hello. Winston probably has some form of environmental allergies, so the best treatment will be from your veterinarian. I am sure most veterinarians are seeing clients in your area, so you may need to call around as to who can see you the quickest. You can use an anti-itch shampoo to quiet his itching temporarily, but make sure he is completely dry before putting the collar back on. Bathe him twice a week using cool water. Check with your local pet retailers, Amazon or Chewy.com for shampoos containing either Pramoxine or hydrocortisone. I would also start Winston on a good omega 3 fatty acid supplement. I would recommend taking Alfie to the vet to have the lump looked at. A wart can become infection however warts are not very common in younger dogs. It is possible Alfie has a skin infection, cyst, non cancerous growth or even an allergic reaction. You can try an over the counter anti histamine but a vet visit would be the best option

I doesn't look like an insect bite. It could be a small wart or other mass. The only way to know for sure would be to have it examined by a vet and have a sample evaluated under the microscope. There is a type of tumor called a Mast Cell Tumor that can cause itching.
