My Westie is itching and licking. How to treat dog allergies at home?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | West Highland White Terrier | Male | neutered | 6 years and 10 months old | 17 lbs

My westie itches, bites and licks all over. He has a Bayer flea collar on for the last 6 months. Anything I can do to treat the itching. I cant go to a Vet because of the virus at this time.

Hello. Winston probably has some form of environmental allergies, so the best treatment will be from your veterinarian. I am sure most veterinarians are seeing clients in your area, so you may need to call around as to who can see you the quickest. You can use an anti-itch shampoo to quiet his itching temporarily, but make sure he is completely dry before putting the collar back on. Bathe him twice a week using cool water. Check with your local pet retailers, Amazon or Chewy.com for shampoos containing either Pramoxine or hydrocortisone. I would also start Winston on a good omega 3 fatty acid supplement. I really like Nordic Naturals for dogs. These should help calm his itchiness until you can have him seen. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
