Why is my dog constantly itching, losing hair, and smelling bad?

I'm sorry that Gracie is so itchy. I would strongly suspect that she has a skin infection, either of bacteria or yeast. This most often happens secondarily when there is something else irritating the skin - like something she is allergic to or even sometimes mites. I would recommend taking her to your veterinarian for an examination. They will most likely do a test called a skin scraping so that they can look at a sample of her skin under the microscope to diagnose it and know how best to treat her. This is not an emergency, but should be addressed as soon as you are able. Until you are able to take her to your veterinarian, I would either put a cone on her or a shirt or baby onesie to prevent her from licking and scratching. You could also apply a thin layer of triple antibiotic cream and hydrocortisone to the skin in order to help with the itching.

Poor Scrappy Brown! It's definitely a constant battle when dealing with an allergy in a dog. Unfortunately there is no cure for these allergies and they require constant management. It would be worth talking with your veterinarian about a new medication called Cytopoint. Cytopoint is an injection that has very good success in treating skin allergies in dogs. This injection lasts for about 4 weeks and could be likely be used for long term treatment of Scrappy's allergies. Medicated bathing would be another option to treat Scrappy. This bathing is done two to three times weekly to help manage skin infections and yeast overgrowths. It would also be worth calling your veterinarian to see if they can prescribe a medicated shampoo like Douxo for Scrappy's skin. You can also consider a specialized diet for Scrappy as food allergies often cause skin itching. A prescription diet like Royal Canin Ultamino may be a good option for him. It sounds like this possible infection may be significant though it is hard to tell without an examination. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

It sounds as if your dog has a skin infection, most commonly caused by an allergy or fleas. The allergy could be a due to a protein in Molly's food or an environmental allergy like to dust, pollens, grasses, etc. The allergy causes your dog to itch and chew at the skin which breaks down the skin barrier. She will need to go to the vet to have an ear cytology performed so they can determine what exact type of infection she has, i.e. is it bacteria, fungal or ear mites causing the issue. Itching is a symptom of many issues including infection ( bacterial & yeast ), inflammation, skin parasites ( fleas & mange mites ), dietary indiscretion, allergies, endocrine abnormalities ( hypothyroidism ), & possibly even underlying liver disease. In an older dog like this, it is always best to have a thorough health workup done to eliminate other possible issues before just starting a shot-gun approach to dealing with the skin. Dogs rarely sneeze because of allergies, so we do want to rule out any kind of nasal or sinus problems. In the meantime, you can bathe Georgia in a mild oatmeal based shampoo in cool water followed by either a leave-in or wash out coat conditioner. You can add approximately 20mg per pound omega 3 fatty acids ( fish oil ) to her diet. Use a good product available at Petco. These symptoms can be from a yeast infection of the skin. I suggest you try to use this medicated shampoo on her. Lather the shampoo, let it sit on her for 10 minutes and then rinse.
