Why are both my dogs itching their butts and tails with black crusts?

Both of my dogs itch a lot by there butt and tail and I just noticed the one has chewed on his tail too the point it is raw but there is a bunch of black crusty stuff on his tail

Hi there! The base of the tail area is a common hiding place for fleas. Unfortunately the picture of the black crusts is a bit blurry, but fleas usually leave what we call "flea dirt" (its really flea poop!) in the hair. It can appear like black crusts. If Major is not on a flea and tick preventative, I highly recommend getting him started on one. Many dogs have allergies to fleas and the vicious cycle of biting, scratching and chewing starts until they have caused a wound or sore.

There are definitely other possibilities other than fleas, but your description and the fact that both dogs are experiencing the same signs is suspicious for a fleas. It is important that Major, does not continue to chew his tail as it looks like he has already made a good start on giving himself a hotspot. I would highly recommend having both dogs, especially Major since he already has a sore, evaluated by a veterinarian to rule out other possible dermatologic problems.

Treating for fleas is an easy place to start and you can do that with out a trip to the vet. I hope this information was helpful and your pups get some relief soon!

    I am so sorry to hear that Major is having such a hard time with his skin it appears to be a case of moist dermatitis or "hot spot". Hot spots can be very difficult to heal, and take a long time. This is caused by a Dog biting or licking their skin when it is itchy. Fleas are the most likely cause. Though allergies can also cause this. The keys to a successful healing process are;

    A clipped area around the sore
    Cleaning the sore with a vet prescribed antiseptic
    Leaving the sore open to dry out (as the moisture promotes bacterial growth)
    Antibacterial/ hydrocortisone spray prescribed from the vet for healing
    An e-collar to prevent Major from scratching or biting at the hot spot and making it worse
    Measure the hot spot with a ruler, and compare in a few days time to make sure that it is reducing in size.

    If you feel like Major is not healing well, I would suggest a trip to the vet for the above medications or call and discuss the possibility for a prescription. Oral antibiotics and/ or a steroid injection may help to jumpstart the healing process.

    I know hot spots can be very frustrating for you as a pet parent and for Major. I sincerely hope it starts to heal soon. Warmest regards to you both.

I am sorry to hear about Freckles. The black crusts could be flea dirt, which is digested blood left behind by the fleas (if you place it on a paper towel and wet the black debris and it turns a rust color then it is likely flea dirt). We can also get skin infections resulting in crust and debris in dogs. I would recommend an examination by his vet if he is very itchy. He may need oral medications, or a topical treatment such as a medicated shampoo like Duoxo Chlorhexidine may be needed.

Hi there and thanks for posting! That tail looks very raw! It is hard to say exactly what the cause of Hunter's skin/ hair condition may be without examining Hunter first, but I can offer some possibilities. Skin irritations around the tail base are a signal of a flea allergy. It only takes one flea to induce a flea allergy! If Hunter is not on any flea preventative monthly, then this could be the culprit. It could also be a bacterial or yeast infection. our veterinarian can diagnose these potential conditions with a few simple skin tests. I would recommend Hunter visit his vet soon to have the possibilities above ruled out. He may need flea preventative/treatment as well as an anti-inflammatory and antibiotics/anti fungals. What causes itchy lumps with black specs on my dog's skin and tail?
It sounds as if your dog has a skin infection, most commonly caused by an allergy, a skin mite (Demodex) or fleas. 

The allergy could be a due to a protein in your dog’s food or an environmental allergy like to dust, pollens, grasses, etc. 

The allergy causes your dog to itch and chew at the skin which breaks down the skin barrier. This then leads to infection. Skin infections are typically characterized by large areas of redness, crusting, flaking, and pustules. A thorough skin examination by your veterinarian should be able to determine the cause of the itch so it can be treated appropriately. Your dog will most likely need antibiotics to help clear up the infection and possibly an allergy/anti-itch medication like Apoquel, Atopica, or Cytopoint to give some relief while the infection clears up. A medicated shampoo may be beneficial as well. I would also recommend he be on a good flea control routinely too.

My dog has itchy black scabs near her tail. Is it fleas or something else?
Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Baby Girl! I think what your describing can still be fleas, especially if you are seeing small black things running around on her skin. Or if you are seeing black squiggley flecks that when wet on a paper towel 'melt" to bloody streaks (flea poop). Flea baths and topical flea treatments do not work as well to prevent fleas from jumping back on the dog. Frequent bathing strips products like Frontline, Advantage/Advantix and Revolution. I have seen dogs infested with fleas where Frontline is used. The fact that Baby Girl has sores makes me recommend that you have her examined by your Vet .She has to be uncomfortable and likely needs antibiotics and something to relieve the itch (prednisone or apoquel). The Vet can check her well for fleas and prescribe a more effective flea preventative (Nexgard, Bravecto, Simparica, Seresto Collar). I hope this helps and I wish Baby Girl a speedy recovery!

Are scabby black spots on my dog's tail near butt a skin infection?
These look like little crusts associated with a skin infection. Your dog was probably chewing his tail excessively and caused the skin infection. If it is localized to only the tail he probably will not need antibiotics. You can try to use a topical antibiotic ointment on the area to help clear it up. If you cannot get it to clear up or if it begins to spread I would recommend taking Louie in to the vet to be checked out.

My dog's haunches have loose hair and black crust. What should I do?
These signs are not specific of one possible disease, but in common with many. Differentials are bacterial/fungal infections, allergies and traumatic injuries. I would recommend to try to keep the areas cleaned with salt water bath (10 teaspoosn of salt in 1 liter of water) or betadine/ or hibiscrub solutions. If the signs are not resolving in one week a check up and more investigations and treatment would be needed at your local veterinarian. A picture would definitively help understanding the underlying cause of the signs described. Pictures can be uploaded by requesting a consultation.
