Is this a dog hotspot on his back? How can I help it heal quickly?

That looks like a pretty nasty hot spot. Hot spots are caused by chronic moisture against the skin (which is common with a collar or something else wrapped around the neck). The best way to treat a hot spot is to clip the hair from the area so that it can fully dry out. You will need to use buzzing clipper, not a razor or scissors. You can try an OTC pet antimicrobial spray, but often prescription sprays or ointments work a little better since they contain a steroid and real antibiotics. You may also have to get creative in finding ways to prevent Peyton from scratching this area, as that will delay healing and can damage the skin. You can try socks, dog booties, or bandaging the feet to cover the nails. Unfortunately, due to the location, he won't be able to use an e-collar. If the hotspot isn't looking better in 48 hours, I would recommend that you have Peyton checked out by a vet.

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I actually do think that it looks like a hot spot but honestly, I have never seen one in that location. A hot spot is really just a skin infection so it is certainly possible especially if he was scraped in that general location. I would not be overly concerned about it as it looks superficial. Licking can cause more infection and will delay healing. Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Based on the picture, it does appear that this could be a hot spot. I typically recommend using products that soothe and treat infection. What I would recommend would be Well & Good Hydrocortisone spray (at Petco) and Miconahex + Triz spray and apply both of these twice daily until resolved. If there is no improvement within 7 days, I would recommend taking your dog in to be seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can't say for certain since I don't have a "before" picture to compare to. But most hot spots are bright red, raw, and moist looking. If that was the case then yes, I definitely think there is improvement. I would absolutely keep the E-collar on at all times so he cannot lick/bite it. I would continue the spray - probably another 5-7 days or so. Of course, if you are worried about anything, please see your vet to be sure we're on the right track. Best of luck to you and Kobe!

That looks more like a really inflamed “hot spot” to me. Put an ecollar on him so he can’t lick at it, and take him to your vet. He may need oral antibiotics and a prescription topical treatment. It could be a hotspot or even a burn. Place an e-collar (cone) on Buster to prevent licking or chewing. Keep the area clean and dry. You can use diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) to gently clean the area. If necessary, see your veterinarian for an exam and treatment if conservative home care doesn't help.

It could be a hot spot (moist dermatitis) or an injury of some sort. It is difficult to determine where on Caesar it is located from the image provided. You have two options. The first is to have him examined by your veterinarian. The area may need to be shaved to provide a better look at it. Afterwards, your vet can diagnose it and administer the appropriate treatment. This could be antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications if it is a hot spot. The second option is to monitor it at home. Use an e-collar (cone) if he is licking or chewing at it. Keep it as clean and dry as possible. You can use a plain, unscented baby wipe or a pet wipe to gently clean it. If it doesn't resolve or causes discomfort, then Caesar will need to got to the vet. Monitor for rapid change or growth, discharge, bleeding, lethargy or pain associated with the site. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.
