My dog was hit by a car, won't eat, is in pain, and breathing hard.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Being hit by a car is very concerning as most of the time there is more damage than what can be seen from the outside. If he is not walking well and his breathing is abnormal, I highly recommend you consider having him reevaluated by a veterinarian since he has not improved. They may take chest x rays to check on why he is breathing loudly such as a pulmonary contusion for example. Treatment would be dependent on findings though at least pain control medications can be started. I hope he does well. Good luck and have a good night!

BB could have a hematoma or accumulation of blood and fluid secondary to the trauma on his neck. I would be worried that he is painful when standing - while it is possible that this is from bruising and soft tissue trauma a broken bone would be another possibility. I would not recommend anything else specific if you are absolutely unable to see a vet right now - just keep him as quiet/calm as possible and continue to offer food and water. You may need to help him stand up - sometimes slinging a towel underneath to assist might help. I do not recommend any over the counter pain medications in dogs. If he stops eating, is having trouble breathing, seems very weak or lethargic, or is unable to walk I would recommend driving to the nearest veterinarian.

The clinical signs you are describing could be due to some boney arthritic changes to part of his jaw if he was hit in the head. Similarly to people, we can see dogs seem more painful when the weather is bad. It is also possible though that his clinical signs are unrelated to his previous injury, and could reflect a new problem that has arisen. If he has problems chewing, he may have dental disease or painful teeth. If he continues to not act himself or has a decreased appetite for longer than a day or so, I recommend having him evaluated by your veterinarian. He/she can perform a physical and oral exam, and may recommend bloodwork to look for any underlying systemic illness that may explain his clinical signs. Please do not give any pain medications to Squeaker that are intended for humans, as these can be fatally toxic to dogs. I hope this is helpful - best of luck with Squeaker! Love his name :)

Oh poor Buddy! Unfortunately, this is a serious problem! I worry that he may have seriously injured himself. Dogs that are hit by cars can have several different types of injuries from minor scrapes and bruises to severe issues like punctured lungs, broken bones, or even a ruptured spleen or bladder. There isn't anything great you can do at home to help him. The main thing is to keep his confined and watch him closely. If you notice any labored breathing or if his gums are not a pink color then I would try to get him to the emergency clinic ASAP as it could be a life threatening emergency. I would not recommend to give him any human pain meds as most are toxic to dogs. I hope this helps and he is okay!

Oh no! Since Griffin seems painful, the best thing you can do is take him to the vet to determine if a fracture is present or if a soft tissue injury (such as a sprain) is present. The vet will be able to prescribe any necessary pain medications, but do not use anything over the counter for pain, as none are safe for dogs. Until you can get to the vet, keep Griffin confined to a very small room or crate to prevent him from moving much or trying to jump, as this could exacerbate any injury. You can try tempting him to eat with a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice, but Griffin is most likely not eating due to discomfort. I hope that he feels better soon!

Oh my! This sounds like she may have a diaphragmatic hernia due to trauma from the car. A diaphragmatic hernia is common to occur after a hit by car. The stomach and abdominal organs are pushed up into the chest cavity, causing breathing difficulty in many cases and problems keeping down food. Other possible causes of her continuous vomiting is stomach bloat and an intestinal blockage (intussusception). These are all quite serious conditions that are considered medical emergencies. There isn't much you can do for any of these possible scenarios at home unfortunately. She needs radiographs done right away to diagnose the problem and then proper treatment.
