My 8-year-old Lab has hip pain and won't walk after jumping. Help!

Rocky's limp can be caused by many conditions including trauma, certain infections which target the joints, an issue with the ligaments (for example, a ligament tear, similar to ACL tear in humans) and arthritis, which is very common in older dogs. I recommend having him seen by a vet to determine the cause of the limp and begin the appropriate treatment. The limp can improve with weightloss if Rocky is overweight and glucosamine chrondroitin supplements if caused by arthritis. Poor Rocco! There are many treatment options for managing hip dysplasia in dogs. I'm not sure what kind of medication he's currently taking, but many dogs with this problem benefit from a combination of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) like Rimadyl or Previcox along with a pain medication like tramadol and/or gabapentin. Glucosamine/chondroitin and omega-3 fatty acid supplements have also been shown to be helpful in many cases, and can safely be given with all of the above medications. Finally, adjunct treatment options like laser therapy and acupuncture can also be very helpful for some dogs with hip dysplasia. I would recommend talking with your vet about these options to see what they would suggest as the next step for Rocco.

It is most likely caused by arthritis (inflammation of the joints), which is quite common in large breed. you will need to take Bolt to the vet to get it confirmed (usually xray needed), then the vet will discuss with your regarding treatment options.

Xrays are recommended to investigate any hip issues and changes in the knee associated with cruciate ligament injury (not to see the ligament itself). Restricted exercise for at least 6weeks is required, if he is lame after he is doing too much. Joint specific food such as hills j/d is very effective in reducing damage in joints and maintaining mobility and is highly recommended to help reduce arthritis changes in injured legs especially in young dogs and to maintain mobility in older dogs. Pain relief, physiotherapy and chiropractic care should also be considered

I'm sorry Jay is having trouble walking! In a senior lab, common causes of difficulty walking include arthritis, hip dysplasia, and joint problems. My recommendation is to have Jay seen by a vet in the morning. The vet can diagnose what is causing his difficulty walking, and can discuss treatment with you. He may benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

It can happen but it is not likely if you continue treating him as you should, he will probably need anti inflammatories for most of his life and at some point might even need to have a surgery done if his condition deteriorates.

Poor Duke! Unfortunately hip dysplasia is a common congenital abnormality in Labs, and it could be that he is suffering from that causing his difficulty getting up, sitting, and laying down. It could also be due to ruptured cranial cruciate ligaments and/or meniscal damage in his knees, which are also common in large breed dogs. He is in pain if he's having these difficulties, and I would have him seen by a vet tomorrow for physical exam, lameness exam, and x-rays. These tests will help the vet identify what is causing his difficulties, and can discuss treatment options with you. If it is a problem with his cruciate ligaments or meniscus, surgery will likely be require to fix it.
