Safe exercise for dog with hip dysplasia & prevent hernia recurrence?

Dogs with hip dysplasia should be thin to reduce the discomfort so I’m glad you are getting him on a diet. Swimming is the best exercise to maintain his fitness, lose weight and protect his hips from further arthritis. You can also take him to a Rehabilitation veterinarian and they can give you specific exercises to do at home and he can walk in an underwater treadmill to keep his rear legs strong. I do recommend giving an omega 3 supplement as well as a joint supplement to reduce inflammation and improve the joint health. I would recommend referral to an orthopedic or neurology specialist in order to correctly determine the underlying cause and to establish a management program going forward to maintain her mobility in the future; the longer this goes untreated the greater chance of permanent changes that may not respond to treatment. Weight management, antiinflammatory medications and diets specifically formulated for joint health and mobility (royal canin mobility / hills joint care) are recommended and acupuncture or chiropractic care may also help with the symptoms

Hello, sorry to heat about Kazuya. Although hip dysplasia can indeed cause lameness and difficulty walking, it sounds based on what you are describing that it may be his knee that is bothering him. One of the tests used to check for knee disease is called a sit test, where we look for dogs sitting with their affected leg fully stretched out. Him sitting side ways could be a form of his stretching out his knee. Kazuya may have a combination of both hip and knee disease, since most dogs with hip dysplasia have this most of their life and its not until the arthritis or a concurrent disease affects them that they start to become lame. You should have him evaluated by your veterinarian to determine if its his knee or hips bothering him. Regardless, both are managed with weight control, anti-inflammatory medications, pain medications, and sometimes surgery. For such a young dog, I recommend to have Boogie examined by the veterinarian. Dysplasia is something that tends to get worse over time and if you take appropriate action now, you may be able to avoid or slow this down. He will need an exam and radiographs to begin figuring out your options. At home you can put Boogie on an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for pets. A joint supplement would also help. Lastly, a prescription diet for joint health will also be beneficial but they cannot fix the dysplasia. You can attempt to manage him with a high fiber diet with extra moisture such as adding canned food or water to the dry food. He will likely need a prescription stool softener as well. In my experience, this will help, but I still find the dog will need surgery. When the dog requires repeated enemas or manual evacuation of the feces by the veterinarian, you will know medical management is not working. I have also seen a rectal prolapse from the dog straining to defecate. Neutering will helps as well with hernia repair. I hope this information helps!

Poor guy. It sounds very plausible that he could either have severe gastritis (inflammation of his stomach) from the recent switch in food, or he has something else entirely going on internally that is the source of his pain. Many organs are in the belly area, so the pain could be from anything. A good physical exam is needed first to isolate where the pain is coming from, and then he needs to get on medications to help mange his hip dysplasia a bit better, besides just the glucosamine. Glucosamine is a good 1st line of treatment for joint problems because it is so readily available, but there are much stronger medications your vet can get Wretch on to help manage his condition better. Heavy breathing after a walk is highly suggestive of joint pain, so its best to visit your vet to get him on something that is going to be more effective for his condition. For now, its best to keep Wretch's activity level light so that he doesn't over exert himself, leading to more injuries and pain. Hello. Sunshine has significant hip dysplasia & also evidence of arthritis in her lower back & hips. This is very sad for such a young dog. She will need pain management, weight control management, careful exercise & possibly some additional therapies to keep her comfortable for the rest of her life. STEM cell or PRP therapy may be of use ( ask your vet about these ), but often surgery is necessary ( removal of the femoral heads ). Acupuncture, laser therapy & rehabilitative medical intervention are all possibilities, too. Please make sure you spay Sunshine.
