That product is fine but it is not addressing all the issues with the joints. This is just fish oil (which is fine) but he will need something that contains glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM to be of any real benefit. Hi there! Great question! I usually use 30 mg/kg/day or as close as I can get with the various capsule sizes. I would need their weights to give you an exact dose however you can figure it out easily with a simple calculation. For example: If Lilly weighs 40 pounds: 40 pounds/2.2 = 18.18kg 18.18kg x 30mg/kg = 545mg So, Lilly would need somewhere around 550mg per day. MSM isn't considered "toxic" but larger doses than can be absorbed can cause loose stools. If taken concomitantly with proven blood thinners (ie: aspirin therapy, heparin) there may be an accelerated blood thinning effect. There are many different recommended doses for glucosamine/chondroitin, but most veterinarians recommend between 15-30 mg/kg of the chondroitin component as a starting dose. This would be up to 327 mg, so you might want to give just one capsule per day. It should be fine to give with fish oil, although both supplements can potentially cause diarrhea so if you see any diarrhea you may want to ask your veterinarian about decreasing the dose or giving the supplements at different times.

You actually want to look at the eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) amounts. Aim for a combined 100mg per kilogram of dog's weight, which would be 400 mg total per day for Charlotte. Start with just 100mg and slowly work up to the full dose. The main side effect that you can see, that would require a lower dose, is diarrhea.

It's important to have him checked by your vet if you haven't already done so to determine the cause of lameness or joint problems so the underlying cause can be managed correctly. The hip / elbow dysplasia can be quite uncomfortable and may need surgical intervention if severe enough by an orthopedic surgeon. NSAIDs are ok to give short term but long term is where you may see liver damage. I always start with a conservative approach for arthritis / joint discomfort. Below are the products I would recommend for Rogue and starting these early may be beneficial in the long run. Some of these products you will only be able to purchase from your vet. Glycoflex- Glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM supplements are beneficial for multiple types of arthritis and appear to aid in cartilage health.
