How long after heartworm treatment is it safe for my dog to hike?

Captain should be fine to go back to his regular activities (dog park, etc.) four weeks after completing his heartworm treatment protocol. Until then, he should be cage-rested to minimize the risk of complications.

Congratulations on adopting Buddha! As you mentioned, crate rest is crucial to recovery from heartworm disease and allowing him to walk down 2 flights of stairs is certainly not ideal. However, carrying a 65 pound dog down two flights of stairs several times per day to go outside sounds like an impossible undertaking. If it is not possible for Buddha to stay in his crate on the first floor, you may not have any other option aside from a slow walk on a leash down the stairs. Again, it is not an ideal situation, but sometimes you just have to make the best of it. I hope that all goes well for Buddha's heartworm treatments and recovery!

I'm so sorry to hear that Buford has contracted heartworms. I adopted a dog with heartworms and it can be challenging to decide on the right treatment protocol for a high energy dog. First, let's clarify that at some point the adult worms are going to die. That can occur from us killing them with the medications that we call an "adulticide" or it can occur when the adult worms reach the end of their life expectancy. At that point. if Buford is exercising, the worm dying can results in a clot to the lungs. An adult worm can live up to 5 years, so you really should keep Buford exercise restricted until his heartworm disease has resolved regardless of how you treat it. Second, a higher dose of ivermectin does not result in the adult worms dying faster. It only keeps Buford from getting any more adult worms which will make his infection worse. I am attaching the following information from the American Heartworm Society ( https://www.heartwormsociety.org/images/pdf/Canine-Guidelines-Summary.pdf ). "In cases where arsenical therapy is not possible or is contraindicated, the use of a monthly heartworm preventive along with doxycycline at 10 mg/kg BID for a 4-week period might be considered. An antigen test should be performed every 6 months and the dog not considered cleared until two consecutive NAD (no antigen detected) heartworm antigen tests, 6 months apart, have been obtained. If the dog is still antigen positive after one year, repeat the doxycycline therapy. Exercise should be rigidly restricted for the duration of the treatment process." So, their recommendation is just to do regular heartworm prevention monthly (not higher doses of ivermectin) combined with Doxycycline for the first 4 weeks, then recheck a heartworm test in 6 months. At some point, if you keep Buford on heartworm prevention monthly, we expect that the worms will die and he will clear the infection. The worry is that the longer the worms are there, the more damage they can potentially do to the blood vessels. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and answered your question. Hello. For the most part, you want to institute a level of exercise reduction so as to decrease the strain on the heart. This should start on the day of diagnosis, & continue with even further reduced exercise when heartworm treatment is started. Once Julius has been properly treated for the heartworms, he can resume normal activity levels. Thank you.

Heartworm prevention should be given year round to be safe in countries with a heartworm problem like the US, but given that it's icy cold there, it's highly unlikely Bella will get it, especially if there's never been a case of it in your country :-) Yes, it's fine for you to take her on a trip in the spring. Recovering from a spay surgery takes 10-14 days, and while she should remain quiet and resting for that entire time, it will be safe to take her on a trip after that time has passed!

hThanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Heartworm treatment can be rough on your pets body. This involves injections given by your vet on 3 separate occasionas. The main concern after the treatment is creating a pulmonary embolism, or clot in the airway, which lead s to shortness of breath, lethargy, and inappetance. A bloated abdomen cannot be determined in this postiion and often requires a physical examination. A bloated abdomen from a heart condition if often not seen unless the heart is very far gone. This would have been likely detected in the work-up for your fur baby to determine if your pet is in congestive heart failure via a chest x-ray. Right sided congestive heart failure is what leads to a bloated abdomen. I hope that this helps and if you still have concerns about your pets health after starting heartworm treatment, then the next best step is a proper physical exam to determine if any heart murmurs exist and potentially repeat x-rays of the chest and abdomen if the physical exam warrants these.
