My dog has high liver enzymes. Where can I get a cheaper ultrasound?

Abdominal ultrasounds would likely cost $300 or more depending on your location. I would advise finding a low-cost spay-neuter clinic in your area. Most of the time, the veterinarians who work at these clinics have extensive experience with cases like this. I would guess that you could get the surgery done for under $200 but again, that depends on where you live. Good luck with Lucas.

Costs vary greatly depending on the hospital and your location. You could certainly call hospitals near you for an estimate - they should be able to give you an idea what the cost of an office visit and ultrasound would be.

I think it's worth having an ultrasound to check Russ's liver. Depending on the results of that, it may be treatable, but of course I can't say for certain without seeing him in person. He's only a middle aged dog, and if there is a chance you can treat him, I would follow up on the diagnostics to see for sure. I'm sorry he's so sick!

Hello, sorry to hear about Jericho. Baseline bloodwork may run anywhere from $120 to 180 dollars. Urinalysis will run anywhere from $45 to 100 dollars. Bile Acids will likely run from $120-180 dollars as well. Most of the places vary depending on which lab they use to send out the blood to and what hey get charged from sending that blood to them. Other diagnostics to consider when working up a liver shunt include an abdominal ultrasound ($250-400) and a CT Scan ($700-1000) . You'll also have to consider medications and special diets for pets with liver shunts. If he is not having any symptoms, you may choose to continue monitoring at home until he gets a little older and bigger so that they can safely obtain all of the blood they may need for this testing. The laboratories will need at minimum 3-5mls of blood to run these tests and 3-5mls of urine. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hi, yes in cats even small changes in liver enzymes can be significant and are worthy further investigations. An ultrasound will have a look at the liver structure and biliary tree and will definitely provide more useful information.

There is a medication called Denamarin that provides general liver function support and can decrease inflammation in the liver. When families can't afford further testing, I often start this medication and recheck bloodwork values in a month to see if they are going up or down. It's still not a cheap medication, and you still need follow up exams and bloodwork but it's less than an ultrasound right off the bat. It also would cure anything, If Denamarin doesn't help, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics can be tired and blood work repeated. I'd talk through these options with your vet and see what they want to start with based on all the other information they have with her exam, etc. Wishing you the best of luck.
