My dog's AST is high. Can pancreatin drugs affect blood test results?

Since young dogs are still growing it is always possible for liver values to be elevated. The AST and ALP can normally be elevated in younger dogs. I would not be concerned unless Bruno is acting ill. If he has any vomiting, diarrhea or anorexia I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam

Pancreatitis is a "spectrum disease" meaning that inflammation of the pancrease, which leads to high levels, can cause anywhere from no clinical signs to severe life threatening signs. We treat symptomatically, so if he is having no signs I would just leave him alone and give his normal diet. You can recheck the values in 2-3 weeks to see if they have come down. Hello. I am sorry to hear about Iako. ALT and AST can become VERY elevated so the values that you have listed are elevated, but only mildly/moderately so. The AST is mildly elevated. These enzymes need to be >2x for us to even look at them. ALP is usually elevated if the liver is irritated or 'upset'. This can also go up with exogenous steroid administration (which you likely got with the Addison's disease) so it depends on when these bloods were taken in relation to his diagnosis. Dehydration (which often occurs with an Addisonian crisis) or hypotension (also occurs) can make these values elevated. They are sensitive. I would recommend just getting the medications under control for the hypothyroidism and the Addisons, and rechecking the liver values 2 weeks after everything has settled down a bit. Good luck with Iako. The alternative is getting a liver biopsy, however I would just monitor and recheck the liver values first. I am not too concerned with these values.

Feeding him before blood tests is not ideal and can really influence tests results (especially if it is a snap test for pancreatitis). I would recommend to repeat the test with a quantitative one if possible before getting into hospitalisation and treatment which may not be needed.

Amylase has to do with pancreas. We do not have many blood tests related to heart disease in animals. The only one I am aware of is called tha BNP and it is a special test. Those liver values are pretty mild and I usually do not do anything about them at this stage other than recheck the liver values in 1-2 months. It could also just be very early in disease or toxin so ask your vet if you should be concerned. As for the atavor, we don’t really see atherosclerosis (clogged arteries) causing cardiovascular disease in dogs- it is very rare. The cholesterol is usually not very important on dog bloodwork and is more likely a metabolic problem than a cardiovascular problem. Statins also come with a lot of side effects. If the vet recommending it is a board-certified cardiologist who has performed a full ultrasound evaluation of the heart and vessels, then absolutely take his recommendation. The blood work changes you are seeing are not very significant in the absence of any pertinent clinical signs. Increased lipase can be associated with pancreatitis, but usually a follow up blood test would only be done if there was evidence of this condition in Phil's overall health and well being (lethargy, vomiting, pain in the abdomen). MCV / MCHC changes are insigificant in the absence of a concurrent anemia. The alkaline phos change is very small. I would continue to monitor Phil's blood work on a twice yearly basis for the time being unless there are significant changes to his health where it would be warranted more frequently. However, it is a not a very sensitive marker of this disease. For this reason, if the remainder of his blood work is normal and he is not acting sick, then I do not worry too much about an elevation in lipase. I hope this information helps!
