My dog is hiding and acting strange. Could she be going into labor?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 80 lbs

My dog has been trying to hide on strange places and acting a little funny she is not eating so far today I didn't really know the due date and this all started last night I checked her temp and it is 98.8 but it's the first time I've checked it. Is she in labor?

It sounds like Hidi could be showing signs of the first stage of labor, however it's difficult to know for certain. A single temperature is not necessarily helpful - in order to use temperature as a predictor for when labor should start you need to take a rectal temperature 2-3 times a day to establish a baseline. Once there is a drop of 1 degree from the baseline then you should see puppies within 24 hours. It might be a good idea to have Hidi examined by a vet since you are unsure of the due date - they can take an x-ray to count the number of puppies and they might be able to estimate about how far along she is by how mineralized the puppies' bones are.
