Can my dog take heartworm & flea/tick meds during whipworm treatment?

Hello. There is no need to separate these two products. There are some heartworm products that should not be given within 2 weeks of some of tick & flea products such as Bravecto & Nexgard, but administering a dewormer will not cause a problem with your flea product. This is correct that Heartgard doesn't cover whipworms. I would talk to your vet about prescribing him a dewormer for the whipworms. Depending on the type of dewormer they have available, he may need to be dewormed again in the future. Finally, since we know you have whipworms in your environment you may consider switching him to something that covers whipworms on a monthly basis. Talk to you vet about which heartworm preventatives they have available that cover whipworms (ex: trifexis, interceptor). I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! We don’t start heartworm and flea/tick prevention until around 8 week of age. Nexgard is the only oral flea and tick preventative approved in the US for 6 months or younger. I would continue the Nemex every 2 weeks until they start heartworm prevention. I hope this helps!

Some veterinarians treat heart worms with a slow kill method by giving heartworm prevention monthly which will kill the adult worms over time and prevent new ones. The more common treatment is with injections to kill the worms quickly. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages. Doing it with a slow kill method is much less expensive. The oral medications for heartworms and ticks have actually been developed to be much safer and less toxic than the sprays. The heartworm pills are very safe and the medication only stays in the body for one day (but it still works for a month). There are a number of different oral tick medications on the market, but they all appear to be quite safe even when used at the same time as heartworm medications. I know Joshie is small and it seems like it would be a lot for her, but the amount of medications in the pills is quite small and I would not expect Joshie to have any problems with the medications. I recommend offering a small meal or treat beforehand so that there is a little food in her stomach before getting these medications.
