My dog is 25 lbs. Should I give Heartgard Blue or Green for her?

Heartgard plus comes in different sizes. Since the next size up is 26 to 50lbs, and she was weighed with leash and collar she can take the 1-25lbs dose. However keep weighing her before giving the dose, as she may gain weight and once she hits 26lbs+ she will need the next higher dose.

Yes, you can give Fern two doses of the Heartgard so that she will get the correct amount of medication. Heartgard is a pretty safe drug, and you would need 10 to 20 times the recommended dose to see toxicity; however, in this case, because two of the chews from the green pack equals the same amount of medication in one chew from the brown pack, it's safe to give to her. In general, the amount of ivermectin in Heartgard is very low, and it is not a problem for a dog that is just under 50 pounds to have the 51-100 pound dose. While this is not good, it is unlikely that your dog will suffer any ill consequences, especially if she has been treated with Heartguard before and did not have a reaction. Ivermectin has a relatively large safety margin.

No you should not give him three Nuheart tablets for up to 25 lbs. You need to take this box back and exchange it for the proper size tablet. The three tablets will not have enough medication to prevent heartworm for your 92lbs dog.

Hi there. 68 mcg is the normal dose of Heartgard for a puppy up to 25 pounds, so Beau should be just fine :) Even if he is MDR1 positive (the gene that makes some dogs more sensitive to ivermectin), normal Heartgard doses are still completely safe for these dogs. They can have difficulty with higher ivermectin doses that are sometimes used to treat certain types of mange and other problems, so we do have to be careful with this type of treatment in herding breeds - but regular Heartgard is such a low dose that it's still perfectly safe.
