My dog has a hard brown lump on her head. Is it a cyst or tumor?

Hello That mass could be an adenoma or essentially a wart, or it could potentially be a cyst, an infected hair follicle, or a tumor. The best way to tell is to actually take a sample of the mass and look at under microscope to see if there any cancer cells, bacteria, or normal cells. Your veterinarian can do this for you and discuss the results and if any further treatment is needed.

This could be a site of a bite wound and, if so, could be an early abscess. It could also just be a cyst (harmless fluid-filled mass). If it continues to grow, has a discharge or seems painful at all Sam needs to get examined by her veterinarian. If it goes away or stays the same I would recommend mentioning it to her veterinarian at her next routine appointment.

I agree that it looks like it is most likely a sebaceous cyst. Sebaceous cysts tend to grow slowly over time, but should not increase in size rapidly or become red. They can become infected, so it if becomes red or painful, I would recommend having your veterinarian examine it in case it has become infected. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. That does look to be a mass. A mass is a collection of cells and can be benign (inflammation, cyst, some tumors) or a malignant tumor. Given the age of your dog this may be a histiocytoma, but as many skin tumors can look alike the best plan to confirm this is for your vet to perform a needle aspirate for cytology. My hunch tells me it is likely a sebaceous gland cyst (benign tumor); however, it is always best to get masses tested through your vet to be sure. Masses like this are often removed during another surgical procedure, such as a teeth cleaning.
