Why is my dog losing hair and skin discolored after having puppies?

This may be caused by excessive licking due to pain or itching, or could also have a hormonal cause. I do see a skin lession on the first photo, so you may want to review your regime of flea control. If you observe your dog and/or the puppies itching, check for fleas. You may also take her and the litter to a veterinarian for an exam if this continues or expands.

Hello. It is not unusually for a bitch to blow her coat while nursing. There is such a great demand for nutrients to go into the milk that often a mother dog's weight & coat will suffer. Dogs can spot for up to 12 weeks after whelping, so as long as the discharge is not getting worse, I would not worry. I do not know why she is favoring her left side. Arthritis is a possibility if she is an older dog, but it certainly can be other things like tick disease to a sprain/strain. If you have not wormed her or the puppies, do so. Pyrantal pamoate is usually started when the puppies are just 2 weeks old. This does not get all the worms, but is safe for mom & the puppies. After having puppies they go through a lot of changes and their hormones are sometimes out of wack. I would recommend to give her a dog omega 3 fatty acid to help with her coat. If she continues to have thin or dull haircoat then I would contact your vet to do a thyroid test on her to make sure that is normal. Hello. Popcorn may have some underlying disease or parasites. Make sure you are feeding her a very high quality puppy diet, as pregnancy & now nursing can make tremendous demands on your pet. She needs all the calories she can take in to prevent further weight loss. It is also possible that her fur loss is also a normal consequence of her pregnancy. That's a good question. The hormonal changes, the energy drain of having puppies and nursing them and the additional stress are all reasons female dogs lose their coats after having puppies. This is normal and once the pups are done nursing and she starts relaxing and gaining back weight the fur will come back in. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. She may have mastitis which could explain the discharge from her nipples. That is something your veterinarian can evaluate. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

These are not typical of a dog after having a litter of puppies. Her age and having difficulty jumping make me think she may be painful from arthritis. Hair loss can be caused by a range of things, including stress, decreased nutrition, mites, fleas, allergies, infection, etc. I would recommend starting with a good physical exam with a veterinarian who may be able to determine what is going on.
