My golden retriever's hair clumps after rain. Is it a skin issue?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 2 years old | 17 lbs

Vets. Not urgent but would like some insight. My 2 year old golden retriever is an outdoor dog. Has adequate shelter and bedding. We had some heavy rain the last couple of days and he refused to come inside until it got so bad we had to drag him in. Today he has all this hard, lumpish clumps of hair on his head. This happend last winter also but we presumed he just hit his head. This doesn’t happen in summer. I’m wondering if it’s something to do with the rain? Seems agitated under

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry to hear Benelly is having fur issues. What you are describing can be due to a variety of reasons, including a skin infection (from getting so wet), mats or tangles in the fur, or another underlying issue. I would recommend having him evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine if there is an underlying skin infection, as well as to have the areas shaved to remove any mats or debris. Good luck!
