Dog gum sore grew after treatment. Is it cancer or an abscess?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bulldog | Male | neutered | 7 years old | 90 lbs

A few weeks ago we noticed that my dogs gum around his canine tooth was inflamed and also had a sore above it. We took him to the vet and she treated him for an abcess. He just finished the medication and the swelling went away but the sore that was there before seems to have gotten bigger. I stopped by her office today and showed her a picture and she has no idea what it is. I'm not sure what it is but its starting to worry me. Does it look like a typical cancer growth? Or abscess?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Frankly, I do not like that at all and recommend removing it. Anything that comes back that quickly after treatment is worrisome. I’d recommend sending to the lab for full identification and to make sure we got it all out.

Best wishes to you and Bash.
