My dog growls at my daughter near his bed. Is this resource guarding?

It is not uncommon for dogs to develop such jealous type behaviors and it is important to recognize the potential dangers in such a situation. A calming diet or supplement can help and i recommend you create a separate area, indoor crate or kennel that she can use with chew toys, beds and food /water. Practice when you are home alone initially and then put her in before people call if possible. If she is calm enough, get the other person to feed and walk her also so she has a more positive association

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Simba is either resource (you and/or the bed) guarding or trying to assert dominance over your husband. I would not allow Simba on the bed until your husband is in the bed OR Simba isn't allowed in the bed at all! the second is my recommendation. This is unacceptable behavior and should be taken seriously. Growling may lead to biting and that is not acceptable. You can also have a light leash on him so that you can pull him from in between the 2 of you to prevent a bite. Personally Simba should be removed from the bed permanently and trained to sleep on a bed on the floor or trained to sleep at the bottom of the bed. I wish you the best!

Guarding of food and feeding opportunities is a common instinctive behavior but the fact this is now extending to normal activities should raise immediate alarm bells. Make sure your daughter has no access to him unless they are kept at a distance and he is completely controlled on a short leash until you can arrange assessment in the ho.e with a certified behaviorist

This is more likely to be a significant dominance and defiance behaviour and needs immediate action to prevent escalation. It is important to start basic obedience training (sit, wait, come) by everyone in the house and also to define clear boundaries so he can understand and predict what is acceptable. In order to help create clear rules for him i recommend nit allowing dogs onto human beds or chairs and preferable out of bedrooms also

Hi there. Many dogs will freeze and growl, snarl, or snap if they have something valuable (like a bone or bully stick) and they're afraid you might take it away. This is actually quite a normal behavior for dogs, and is just their way of trying to protect their stuff :) To help Sam learn that you're not a threat, you can try walking by and casually tossing him a treat occasionally while he's chewing on his bone. This way, he learns that good things happen when you approach - so no need to growl! NEVER reprimand him for growling, and never try to forcibly take the bone away, as this will only teach him that he was right to be wary of you approaching and is likely to make the problem worse. My concern is more that he growled at you when you tried to get him off the bed. Some dogs begin to feel they are our equals when they are on our level, such as on the couch or in the bed. If he is becoming “bossy” or obstinate, then I would recommend keeping him off the bed. Also, if you need to get him off the bed then entice with a treat, or have a leash on. Hello. I’m sorry to hear about the trouble you’re having with Little Miss Blue. Is there any chance she could be pregnant? I noticed that you listed her as not spayed. Pregnancy can cause aggression especially if they are close to having puppies. If she is not pregnant sometimes dogs that are painful will start showing aggressive behavior suddenly. I would have your vet examine her and make sure that she is OK and not suffering from any thing painful, also it may be good to have them run for blood work and make sure nothing else is wrong. I would start there and if she’s healthy and not pregnant I would try to find a behaviorist to work with to alter these aggressive tendencies.
