Why is my 9-year-old German Shepherd's hock swollen? Is it cancer?

I cannot give you a definitive answer to your question just by looking at the is one x-ray. I can't get a good look at the x-ray as it won't enlarge enough for me to see what I need to see. Regardless, I think I see a lucent area on the calcaneous. That could be cancer but it could be osteomyelitis (bone infection) or even a fungal infection. It does not appear to involve the joint. The calcaneous is not at typical area to get bone cancer if that is any consolation. It is not impossible, just not common. This could be a hygroma (inflammation of the bursa) but without examining her myself it is too hard to say. I'm sorry to hear this is happening. Unfortunately, bone cancer tends to be aggressive. I would recommend first having radiographs done to verify that a tumor is present. If there is in fact bone cancer, talk to her vet to see if surgery makes sense. Many times these tumors have already spread by the time clinical signs show up. The lump could have other origins as well so the first step is to find out what it is. I hope this helps!

Without being able to do a physical exam on Gypsy Rose, it is a little difficult for me to tell you what exactly is going on with her wrist. If it is very hard, then that could indicate that a small fracture did not heal properly, that her body is continuing to try to heal something in that area, or that there is bone cancer present. If it is soft, that could indicate a seroma (small pocket of fluid) or ongoing inflammation. Hygromas do not typically form in this area, but that is another possibility that would not necessarily turn into cancer. I would recommend that Gypsy Rose go back to the vet for additional x-rays. Rottweilers are prone to developing bone cancer, and I would want to make sure we caught it as early as possible. She may also benefit from anti-inflammatory medications

If I read this correctly your dog's leg was swelling to this size within a few hours. If your vet took x-rays and found bone lesions then there is indeed a possibility of bone cancer. However only a biopsy of the bone or the tissue of the swelling will prove that there is cancer. Without the possibility of examining the leg myself I can only give you possibilitites of why there is a swelling: 1) Check for puncture wounds or an injury. this could be a peracute infection of the joint. 2) this may be an injury of the joint such as a fracture or tendon injury, You should take your dog back to a veterinarian for an exam, especially since this is painful.

Oh no, I'm so sorry Harvey has taken a turn for the worse! Yes, it is possible that this is cancer, and if he has a swollen front leg and can bare little weight, I would be concerned that he is suffering from osteosarcoma (cancer of the bone). I would have him seen by a vet immediately to have his leg examined and x-rays. This will be very painful for him, and the x-rays can diagnose if he does have an osteosarcoma. Unfortunately, an osteosarcoma is a highly malignant, fast spreading type of cancer. Amputation of the leg is an option, and with amputation, the dog can have an addition three months of life depending on if the cancer has spread or not. I would take Harvey into a vet now. I'm sorry :-(

If the x-ray was clear than cancer is not likely. The swelling is most likely from the door hitting her leg. Other things that can cause knee swelling would be arthritis, ligament injury, patella luxation, infections (Lyme disease, etc.), strain/sprain. If the swelling does not resolve after being on the anti-inflammatory than she will need to be rechecked by your vet for more diagnostics to determine the exact cause and best way to treat.

Hi, It looks to me as though Shadow may have a hygroma. This is a false bursa that develops over bony prominences, commonly the elbow, due to repeated trauma from pressure points while lying down on or hitting the elbows on hard surfaces. This repeated trauma creates an inflammatory response, which results in a dense-walled, fluid-filled cavity. Overtime, severe inflammation may develop, and ulceration, infection, even abscesses can form on the hygroma. To prevent this from getting worse, provide plenty of soft padding and soft bedding for Shadow to have to prevent more trauma to the area. In minor cases even elbow pads can be bought for dogs. For severe cases, surgeries can be performed to try to cosmetically fix the area after flushing, draining and repairing the areas. Hope this helps! -Dr. Gordon
