Why does my small dog gag and growl when I eat? Should I be concerned?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 5 lbs

hello, I have a teacup yochon named Oliver he’s 2 years old. After having Oliver for 6 months he started gagging whenever you ate around him or since he’s a teacup his blood sugar got low he would gag others say he does it for attention since he growls when pure eating or when you don’t give him any attention. He’s been doing t ever since. He’s seems healthy a very playful dog that’s full of enegery so because of that I don’t know if I should be concerned

If it's concerning enough to ask about it, then I would recommend having Oliver checked out by your vet. If nothing is found it will at least give you some peace of mind about the issue. As small breeds do get hypoglycemia easily, feeding him several smaller meals throughout the day may help with that, and may make it easier for him to eat enough throughout the day. As for the growling, or any food guarding, talking with a trainer or behaviorist in person is a good idea to start formulating a training plan that can help with resource guarding and other similar behaviors.
