How to keep my dog's fur shiny and prevent oiliness and shedding?

Sharon is such a great looking dog! The best thing you can do for the fur is to ensure he is on a high quality dog food. You can also add in some fish oil and omega-3 fatty acids over the food twice a day. This will help make the coat grow and shiny. Also, brushing him daily will keep it clean. Oily hair often indicates that there is an underlying problem that is not allowing the skin to maintain a healthy environment. This could be caused by a metabolic condition like hypothyroidism, or a nutritional deficiency. In order to narrow-down the cause of this, you will need to take her to a vet. A vet can help narrow-down the underlying problem with a standard examination and advise you on the necessary diagnostics and/or treatment. For now, you can help to keep the coat free from oil and infection (they often have secondary infections with this disorder) by giving a bath once every three days with a medicated shampoo (can get this at the pet store). It's best to ensure the shampoo is worked well into her coat and is allowed to have at-least 15 minutes of contact time on the skin. Make sure to rinse and dry her well. I do not use anything on the skin itself usually unless it's very dry and flaky, then I use a moisturizing grooming spray after a bath with a hypo allergenic shampoo. Bathing too often does lead to the coat drying out. You can try supplement him with fish oil tablets to see if that helps. You can try using a moisturizing shampoo for when he gets really dirty, but if he's not very dirty after a visit to the stables, just rinse him instead of bathing him. Make sure she does not have any red/pink skin discoloration or scabby lesions on her skin. If you see these, she may need antibiotics from a veterinarian to help her from being itchy.
