My pug's fur isn't growing back on a big missing spot. What's wrong?

She may have an endocrine disease, such as hypothyroidism (her thyroid gland isn't working right) or Cushing's disease (her adrenal glands are releasing too much cortisol). It could be that he suffered an injury in that spot, causing the hair loss. It can take weeks to months for fur to grow back in fully. It could also be due to a medical illness such as ringworm. It's always a good idea to have any hairless spots checked out by vet to determine if there is a medical problem causing it so it can be treated as needed.

The hair loss on Coco’s face is very suspicious for mites or ringworm (which humans can get as well). Less likely would be food allergies. Secondary bacterial infections are common with all these conditions. I recommend to have her see her veterinarian who may preform a skin scrape to check for mites. Treatment for mites varies. She will likely get medication for the bacterial as well. If she seems itchy, she should wear and Elizabethan collar to protect the area and try not to let her run it. It might take a long time, don't worry but, if there are not even tiny hair or if it is more than 6 weeks without improvements, consider to bring Music back to your local vet for a check up. In rare cases metabolic diseases (i.e. thyroid disfunction) can increase the length of time necessary for the hair regrowth and a blood test might be necessary to diagnose it. In the meantime make sure Music does not lick the affected area and add to her diet some omega 3/6 that can be find at your local pet shop. Poor Cooper! You could certainly try an omega-3 fatty acid supplement such as Welactin to see if this helps. But, it isn't normal for it to take so long for hair to grow back, so I would be concerned that he may have a thyroid problem or some other underlying medical condition causing problems with his hair growth. When you can, it would be a good idea to have him examined by a vet - he/she can do some basic blood work to check his thyroid function as well as liver, kidneys, etc. If there is a problem, it's usually very treatable with medication once a diagnosis is made, and would be very helpful in getting his hair to grow back in.

There is something called post-clipping alopecia that is most likely the problem. Happens quite frequently after shaving for a fentanyl patch. The reason the hair fails to regrow is unknown. Total hair regrowth may take 6 to 24 months, although most animals regrow hair within 12 months. Some things that may help the hair to grow back faster would be: * vigorous brushing of the area * massage * hydrotherapy with warm water * covering the bald area with a sweater to increase skin temperature All of those things increase blood flow to the skin and may stimulate hair regrowth in some cases. So, give it some more time and if after about 10-12 months the hair has not grown back then speak to your vet about testing for underlying diseases like a low thyroid, cushing's disease, etc. Hope this helps. This is probably due to a severe allergy, although it could also be fleas or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat Lila with a high quality flea treatment (e.g. advocate or advantage), then get her to the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy. Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair the skin lesions (steroids and antibiotics). simultaneously you should start her on a prescription hypoallergenic diet for at least 2 months. Hopefully you will see some results after all this, if not you and your vet should consider putting her on a long term allergy treatment (Atopica or Apoquel).
