My dog found something on the ground while walking. Is it safe to eat?

Hello. It looks like something or someone vomited up a combination of emesis & something very fibrous. It is probably indigestible , hence the reason it was vomited up in the first place. What it may do though is cause gastrointestinal distress which may result in vomiting, nausea and diarrhea. If any of these are observed, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Otherwise, she is likely going to be ok. Best of luck!

If it is that big of an issue, I would look into teaching Snowball "Leave it". You can find various tutorials on YouTube that will walk you through it. Basically, it teaches Snowball that it isn't OK to just pick things up off the ground and eat them, and that she'll be rewarded for leaving it behind instead. Teaching other things such as drop/trading what's in her mouth for a reward, may also help. You should still be walking her, but you can keep an eye on her during your walks, and if you see her start to eat something, move her to another area, or remove the item from her mouth. If she's very mouthy and likes to carry toys, you can also bring a toy along on your walks for her to keep in her mouth and potentially deter on other things. If she does get into something she shouldn't and is ill, having your local vet's number on hand is always best as even the most vigilant of owners and well-trained of dogs can sometimes get into things they shouldn't.

In general, it probably didn’t hurt Cocoa but it’s not the best choice for a treat. Stick to dog treats in the future- especially if you’re not sure what something is because there are few things that are very dangerous to dogs (xylitol, macadamia nuts to name a few). If she ate something toxic (like grapes or onions) or something that could cause an obstruction (like a chicken bone), then she could get sick. If she just stuck her nose in and didn't come in contact with anything, then she will be ok. I would watch for any change in behavior, vomiting or diarrhea and take her to a vet if noted. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This can of course be an issue as she could eat something tha perhaps upsets her stomach or even worse that causes an obstruction. The best thing is to teach her by continuously letting her know that that is unacceptable behavior. Otherwise, another option is using a basket muzzle when going outside which may prevent her from getting things in her mouth. Good luck and have a great day!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! No onions, garlic, raisins or grapes. I would be careful cooking for a young growing puppy. I don't like it for adult dogs because unless a veterinary nutritionist is balancing the food appropriately you are at risk of causing problems. You have to be sure the diet has the correct calcium/phosphorus ratio and has sufficient amounts of certain amino acids, for example taurine. A diet that doesn't have appropriate levels of taurine can cause heart disease and heart failure in animals. Commercial diets are the best thing to feed your pets.
