What food can prevent my dog from smelling bad so soon after a bath?

It's likely Sahara has either a bacterial infection, a yeast infection or severe allergies. Less frequently, an underlying endocrine disease may also be the root cause. When bad odors won't go away with a bath, it generally indicates a problem. I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian so that she can have the correct diagnosis and receive appropriate treatment. Each one of these problems is detected and addressed differently. Food allergy is best ruled out with a diet trial using a hydrolyzed protein. Endocrine diseases are detected with blood work. Environmental allergies are a little more difficult to detect but a response to therapy or a blood test can give an indication. Once you figure out and address the underlying cause, the itching and odor should not come back. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. Changing the food may help with the gas, but is not likely to help with the body odor and bad breath. They tend to smell bad like this when they have infections. For the mouth, this usually requires a good dental cleaning. For the body, this can usually be helped by bathing a few times with a medicated shampoo (can find this in the pet store). As for changing the food, it may require that you feed a lower calorie, less fat sort of food. I recommend starting Diezel on a senior diet food, since he is eight years old. These diets have less calories and may help if fed as directed by the manufacturer. My best recommendation is to have Diezel evaluated by a veterinarian. The pancreas secretes digestive enzymes that are needed for proper metabolism. The more fat in the diet, the harder the pancreas has to work to make enzymes that break down the fat. That is why very fatty foods--such as bacon grease or fatty scraps-- can cause severe pancreatitis. Often, dogs that have a history of pancreatitis are put on low fat food diets to help reduce the likelihood of pancreatitis becoming problematic again. Grain free food has not been shown to have any benefit in regards to pancreatitis. As a side note, grain free diets HAVE been shown to have a major correlation with an increase in heart disease. That's a subject for another day though. ;) Your concern about him stinking all the time-- there are a few possible causes. How is his mouth? Is it possible that the odor is due to dental disease? Or possibly ear infections which can also have an odor? Or, he may have a fungal or bacterial infection in his skin that is the cause.
