My dog changed food, now has sore tongue, yellow stool. What to do?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The skin lesions on the scrotum and nose could be related to allergies, but not the tongue. The tongue looks very sore and it does resemble chemical burn. Please, take Diesel to your vets, as this must be very painful for hm. He also may have burn to the esophagus and the stomach if he swallowed the corrosive substance.

Many things could be going on including intestinal worms, infection, a foreign body, pancreatitis, etc. Your vet can evaluate Kobe and then recommend some tests such as a fecal exam, blood work, and possibly x-rays to determine what is wrong. Poor Kai! You are correct to be concerned. Diarrhea could be caused by toxin ingestion, parasites, change in diet, infectious diseases, blockage in the gastrointestinal tract caused by ingestion of a foreign body (such as a piece of the bones you mentioned), or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. I recommend you make an appointment to take Kai in to the vet, and take in a fecal sample from Kai when you go. Your vet will likely want to test the sample to see what kind of parasites Kai may be dealing with so that they can be treated for accordingly. I recommend that you avoid feeding bones, antlers, and similar objects. Make sure with anything you feed Kai that you are able to easily dent the surface with a fingernail, as anything harder than that could lead to fracturing of the teeth or blockage of the gastrointestinal tract.

Hello and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I agree this sounds concerning and I recommend to have Kobe examined by the veterinarian. With the history of a recurrent mass/injury, I'm concerned there is an underlying reason. There are a few reasons and one can be quite serious: a skin cancer called a Mast Cell Tumor. Testing for this skin cancer is generally easy thankfully. Kobe shouldn't need sedation or stitches as long as he will stay still for a quick needle poke. In the mean time, you'll want to protect the lesion from infection. 1. Stop any licking (since this can make it worse) - Kobe should wear an elizabethan collar at all times. - Remember that the collar must come out past his nose in order to be effective. 2. Next, wash the area once a day with either plain hand soap (like Dial) or a medicated pet shampoo. Rinse the area well and gently towel dry. -This will help to control the number of topical pathogens as well as remove oil and dead skin cells. 3. Lastly, apply a topical antibiotic twice a day to the red areas. Make sure the skin is dry before application. -Just a dab will do and rub it in well. Neosporin is fine to use. 4. Keep the paw clean and dry *Always wear gloves to handle this lesion and wash your hands afterwards. I hope things get figured out quickly! Sincerely, Dr. Elizabeth

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Kobe! He looks as though he should be miserable. That location on the back is classic for fleas. I would check closely for that. Some dogs are flea allergic and it only takes one flea bite to cause an allergic reaction (from flea saliva). I would use a good flea and tick preventative on both your dogs. I like the Seresto collar or any of the oral medications (Nexgard, Simparica, Bravecto). Kobe should see a Vet to ease his suffering. You can find low cost veterinary clinics with in some SPCA's. He ideally needs antibiotics and steroids. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Kobe. Not eating indicates that he is not feeling well. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian to determine the cause of his symptoms. He could be painful somewhere or be experiencing nausea that is affecting his appetite. His veterinarian will examine him and determine how best to make him feel better. Thank you for your questions about Koda. I would not say that is normal and I suspect it may be a sign that he does not tolerate the new diet as well. The jury is still out on grain free food, some pets do well on it and other ones develop heart conditions and constipation issues. Most vets generally do not recommend them. I do advise changing the diet again. If you are looking for a nice food, I recommend a brand called Royal Canin. It is generally very easy to digest and most pets who eat this diet have nice coats, good stool quality and low stool quantity (a sign that the diet does not contain many fillers). Change the diet slowly over about a weeks time. If the diarrhea continues, have the stool checked for parasites as this can also cause changes to the stool. I hope you found this helpful.
