My pet has flu-like symptoms, far from vet. What can I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 10 lbs

My pet has flu teary eyes nose discharged lethargy like he's coughing sneezing and breath faster than normal were far from the vet and can u pls help us how to cure his flu it's been going on for more than a week now he looks skinny already but he's eating normally but not drinking much water I need to feed him Gatorade to replenish him...thanks in advanced hv a great day .---maya

Legally, we are prohibited from recommending medications, even over the counter ones, in the absence of a physical exam and a patient-veterinarian-client relationship. The good news is that you can continue to feed Chou-Choi and offer Gatorade as you have been doing. Dilute the Gatorade with an equal amount of water. Feed him as much as he'll eat without getting sick. As long as he is eating a good quality food, he will begin to gain weight. Keep him warm and as stress free as possible. Keep his eyes, nose and mouth clear. If he seems congested, run a hot shower and place him in the bathroom (NOT in the tub) for 15-20 minutes. The steam will help loosen congestion.
Since a veterinarian is unavailable, consider calling a local clinic and speaking directly with a doctor. Depending on local laws, the vet may be able to send you medication if indicated.
You may need to bring him to a veterinarian if he does not show signs of improvement or continues to lose weight in spite of a healthy diet.

I am assuming that he also sent home some oral medication for you to continue administering for the upcoming days. Unless matters are getting progressively worse, i would give the drugs some time to work before assuming the worst. If matters are looking worse, then you may want to consider returning to your vet for some diagnostic testing instead of just symptomatic treatment. This might include imaging modalities like x-ray and ultrasound, and some laboratory blood work to look at vital organ function. Hope this helps.

My dog has flu symptoms. Can I wait until morning to see a vet?

If Pilos is resting and not having labored breathing, he should be ok to wait until tomorrow for his vet visit. Call ahead, and when you arrive the staff may encourage you to wait in the car with him until the vet is ready to examine him, or they may bring you straight into an exam room to prevent spread of infection. Fingers crossed its just a mild respiratory infection, but I'm glad you're taking precautions.

My dog ate flu tissues, now sick and sluggish. Give Benadryl?

Poor girl. Benadryl is an antihistamine so unfortunately it won't do her any favors here because it is unlikely that this is an allergic reaction . It is best to get her seen by a veterinarian to look for the underlining cause of her illness. There are very few strains of the flu that can be transferred to our pets, but there is that slight possibility. Also if she is sick she will need prescription medication through your veterinarian to get her well again. They may have to do some baseline bloodwork to get a good picture of what is going on with her and potentially even x-rays if she is having any coughing symptoms or abnormal lung sounds. I hope she feels better soon and I would recommend scheduling an appointment as soon as possible. Best of luck and take care.

If Snowy is dealing with a respiratory infection, this could be due to a bacterial or viral infection. To start, you can put her near a humidifier and start her on Lysine to see if this helps. Lysine will help lessen the severity and duration of a herpes infection and the humidifier will help moisten the air possibly improving any congestion. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and if these symptoms persist or she worsens, then I would have a veterinarian take a look at her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.

My 2-month-old kitten is dehydrated, won't eat, has flu. What to do?

Poor little one, I would recommend that he has fluids intravenously and medications through the drip until he starts to eat.. then you can start oral medications. If he is dehydrated already, as time goes by without eating, he will be getting worse. Hope you can have him rechecked and that something a little more intensive can be done for him. This is generally treated with supportive care. Antibiotics may be needed to treat secondary bacterial infections. Cough suppressants and bronchodilators are generally used as well. If severe, cases should be managed in the hospital setting. I hope this helps!

Sick kitten with tired eyes after flu. What can I do at home?

Besides making sure that the kitten is eating and drinking there is not much more you can do without veterinary care. Monitor for additional signs and have the kitten examined by a vet if he becomes worse. He may need an oral antibiotic and/or other medications to help treat. You could also try a Lysine supplement and see if that helps.
