How to tell if specks are flea dirt or eggs, or just dirt/dandruff?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

The past few weeks I have obsessed over fleas.now I am questioning everything even though he is on a vet preventative.before I saw a live flea I saw maybe five specks of dirt, but assumed it was flea dirt but then real dirt.i also noticed white specks which I thought was dandruff but am now questioning if it was flea eggs.the scary point was the live flea which i assumed was from outside. So did I miss the signs all along or is it my OCD messing with my head?how much flea dirt would one flea make

The way to tell if it is flea dirt is to put the specks on a wet paper towel and if it is flea dirt it will turn red. If it doesn't leave red on the paper towel than it is not flea dirt. Flea dirt is basically flea feces so it does not actually turn into a flea. The eggs that a female lays will develop into fleas and one flea can lay a lot of eggs. Use a monthly flea prevention, like Frontline, Revolution, Advantage, etc. Also treat your house with a product that has a growth regulator if you see any live fleas.
