My indoor dog has flea dirt, but I don't see fleas. What to do?

High quality flea preventatives are very effective, so I would be surprised if your dog is itching from fleas. Different flea preventatives utilize different mechanisms of action to kill fleas. Some preventatives work by killing the flea after it bites, so it is not unheard of to see one rare flea. The important part is that the flea is killed before it has a chance to reproduce and lay eggs. The next time you see dirt on your dog, try to put it onto a white paper towel and moisten it slightly. Flea dirt becomes a reddish-brown color when wet. If you do not notice a significant color change, it is just regular dirt. The dandruff may be appearing as a result of skin sloughing when your dog itches. Allergies to a wide variety of environmental influences and food are a common cause of itching in dogs. Consider discussing this intense itching with your vet because dogs can develop skin infections by introducing bacteria or yeast from excessive scratching.

Fleas live on the surface of the skin, and a live flea will definitely move if you try to touch it. A dead flea would be easy to pick up and remove from your dog's skin. It can be difficult to differentiate flea dirt from regular old dirt - if you comb some of the dirt and put it on a white paper towel and then wet it with water, flea dirt will turn red because it is digested blood. Flea eggs are too small to see without a microscope. A flea comb can make it easier to find both adult fleas and flea dirt - run the comb along your dog's back near the base of the tail since this is typically where fleas like to hang out. Also, if your dog is not on a flea preventative I'd recommend talking to your veterinarian about recommendations.

Because adult fleas only represent a very small percentage of the flea population it is very possible Princess has fleas and you just aren't seeing them. I'd recommend using a good quality flea preventative like Frontline Plus, Revolution or Advantage. It usually takes 4 months of monthly treatment to fully eradicate a flea problem. Princess could also be having these skin issues related to a food allergy or environmental allergy so if the problem persists or gets worse you should have her examined by your veterinarian. You can also check for little black specks on his fir closest to his skin called flea dirt. Likely though if you apply flea prevention and the doctor found no evidence he should be ok but if you find these little black specks of dirt, a way to conform if it is indeed flea dirt is take a paper towel, wet it, and smear the dirt specks around. Normal dirt will not look any different after doing this however flea dirt will have a reddish color to it

If it didn't turn red, it is not flea dirt. Flea dirt will turn red due to the blood in the feces. It is leftover dirt, you do not need to worry. You have him on a monthly prevention, he is well protected.

The best way to determine if the dark specs are 'dirt' versus 'flea dirt' is to collect the specs on a clean white paper towel and apply hydrogen peroxide. If it turns rusty colored, it likely flea dirt. Flea eggs are very small and you are not likely to see those with the naked eye. Also, the best place to look for fleas is on the lower back and between the hind legs on your dog. If you determine that you are seeing fleas or evidence of fleas, I would recommend talking to your veterinarian about switching flea products. Hope this helps.

I think you are in the clear if you haven't found any further fleas and he's on a monthly preventative. If he had more and you used a flea comb, you likely would have found additional evidence of fleas. Because you didn't, I would not worry :-)
