My dog fell and is limping with a swollen wrist. What should I do?

Hi there. So sorry to hear this happened to Zeus. It could be just a sprain/strain or he could have just "stunned" his leg. Give it some time overnight and see how he is tomorrow. If he is still limping tomorrow and it is the same as he is tonight or worse, then I suggest you get him to your vet for an exam. If his limping is better but he still isn't 100% you could give it a couple more days to see how he progresses. It is possible that he could have torn a tendon/ligament or he may have a fractured bone (they don't always swell up) or have a dislocation. DO NOT give him any medications. If he needs medications you need to get them from your vet. Just keep him calm and quiet tonight and check to see how he is in the morning. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. Treatment will be dependent on findings though at the very least pain control medications can be prescribed. I highly recommend strict rest which at times can make a big difference. Good luck! Do not give any medications to your dog without the advice of your veterinarian. Many OTC medications can be toxic to pets. Ideally, Ziggy should be examined by your veterinarian or a veterinary orthopedic specialist to diagnose ligament damage, arthritic conditions, fractures or tumors. X-rays of the knees and hips will likely be recommended. These can be done under anesthesia or sedation. A veterinary house all service may be an option for an exam. Afterwards, a sedative and/or pain management can be dispensed to make the trip to the clinic easier and less stressful for all parties.

I recommend to have Zeus examined today. Shifting leg lameness can indicate a few conditions like Lyme disease, panosteitis or an autoimmune condition. These conditions are all very painful and need to be addressed. I hope he starts feeling better quickly and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would highly recommend that you have Rocko evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment. I am suspicious that this may be due to more severe underlying trauma like a deep infection or possibly a fracture of the bone in that region. Upon further examination, they may recommend radiographs of the affected area. Treatment would depend on findings. I hope they can help him. Have a good day!
