My dog breathes fast from her stomach while sleeping and honks.

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | 15.7 lbs

I am kind of worried about my dog. Well my dog is sleeping I have measured her breath per minute, it's 74 and that seems high. She hates toys and never plays so I know it's not panting from exercise. And what I've noticed is that it seems to be her lower stomach that's doing the breathing versus I guess her chest. To be honest I prefer her to not be on the grass a whole lot because even walking out to go potty she does this weird hacking Goose honking thing. I don't know what that is. Thank you!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Without seeing Chloe it is hard to say what is going on. That is a rapid respiratory rate for a sleeping dog. The goose honk is likely a collapsing trachea. This is common in small dogs and there is no cure. The tracheal rings collapse on itself and is common as small dogs age. I recommend taking Chloe to a vet to listen to her heart and lungs and take radiographs of her chest to find out the cause of the high respiratory rate. Good luck and kisses to Chloe!
