My Chihuahua has face swelling and jaw cysts. Is it an abscess?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 3 months old | 9 lbs

Hi there. My 3 year old Chihuahua male developed swelling in his face 3 weeks ago. I thought he had been stung by a bee, so I gave him a doggy dose of benadryl. Much if the swelling went down by the next day, but his eyes developed conjunctivitis. No other dogs got it so I treated the eyes with microcynah, working great. 1 wk later developed quarter size cyst below the ears on jaw. I shaved hair away gave antibiotics. 2 days later they ruptured. Parotid cysts? He's healing, how long till heal

It sounds like a tooth root abscess but without seeing it, it is hard to say. I recommend an exam by a vet to check his teeth and start him on oral medications. Please don't give any more medications until a vet says so. Kisses to Mr. Tiddies!

This looks like a pretty sever skin infection which may be due to underlying allergies. It is also possible from your description that there may be dental disease with a possible tooth root abscess. I recommend you have Dylan examined by your veterinarian right away for testing and appropriate treatment.
