My dog's Epiphen pills are hard to split. Is uneven splitting safe?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Female | spayed | 6 years and 2 months old | 14.5 lbs

My vet is trialing my dog on Epiphen 30mg half a tablet twice a day but I'm worried about splitting the tiny pill it's difficult to break and not splitting evenly I'm worried I might overdose her with the uneven sizes now I've managed to half them Is it safe to do it this way ?

The risk of overdose is extremely small due to the range in dosing for phenobarbital. Discuss having the medication compounded into a more convenient form, such as a chewable, with your veterinarian. He or she may already work with a veterinary compounding pharmacy.
