My German Shepherd has EPI. Are their stools mustard colored?

EPI generally not an emergency at this stage and there are other causes of stool discoloration. I recommend to have Myles seen by his normal veterinarian (as long as he seems normal/happy) and have the stool checked for parasites and bacterial over growth. The doctor may recommend treatment based upon the results and then you wait and see how things okay out. I do recommend to feed pets a highly digestible diet such as Royal Canin. I have seen many puppies with bowel abnormalities that normalize eating this diet. EPI does typically present as a greyish stool with a shiney coating (that’s the fat in the stool). The pets also usually are slow to grow and gain weight poorly. If this is suspected, your doctor will testing to diagnose the condition. An infection should be ruled out. A diet change can help to improve stool quality if those tests are negative. A test for EPI will be definitely a very good idea as the symptoms are consistent with EPI and this disease usually affects German Shepherd Dogs. Typically, EPI affects younger dogs, and you are correct, they typically affect German Shepherds. A lot of the time, the cbc and chemistry panels are normal. Occasionally, you can see elevated liver enzymes like ALT on the chemistry. However, to properly diganose EPI, you need to send out a special test to a specific lab. This blood test is called canine serum trypsin-like immunoreactivity. This is a direct look at the pancreas' functionality. Given Uma's age, she less likely has EPI since she is almost 10 years old. Therefore, there may be another reason she is losing weight. If her bloodwork is all normal, then I would recommend abdominal radiographs or an abdominal ultrasound. I believe you are asking about Pancreatic Insufficiency. The pancreas does not make the appropriate enzymes so the food is not digested properly. These dogs often very thin as they cannot properly absorb nutrients. Tests can determine if the pancreas is the cause and treatment is an enzyme supplement. If you suspect Kia has this problem, take her into see the veterinarian for an evaluation.

He may also need an antibiotic, metronidazole, and vit B12 injections. Adding a probiotic to his diet may help, too.
