Dog's elbow sore won't heal. What can I do or should I see a vet?

Poor Jayce! Making sure he has an Elizabethan (cone) collar on is the best first step as that will prevent him from getting to the wound and licking it/removing the bandage. You will also either want to change the bandage regularly, or clean out any dirt or debris that is getting into the wound. If it looks infected, isn't healing, or is worsening, a vet visit is best to have the area cleaned out and antibiotics given.

Start doing warm water and Epsom salt compresses several times a day. Try to keep her laying in soft areas instead of tile, concrete etc (easier said than done). She will likely need antibiotics, And these can take a while to heal. There is a product called “Dog Leggs” that you might want to look up that protect the elbows. Hello, elbow & hock calluses, or hygromas, are common on most large breed dogs, regardless if they spend their time on a couch or concrete. There is very little muscle under the skin in these areas, so the skin is easily damaged. Often with time, the skin toughens up & no longer become easily damaged. In the meantime, Koba may need antibiotics, or gentle cleansing of the area with an antibacterial wipe, such as Hibiclens. It is hard to say without seeing this in person but this does have the appearance of an elbow callus. Some dogs develop these if they spend a good deal of time laying on hard surfaces. I would consider getting a cytology done on the area to be sure it doesn't have a secondary bacteria or yeast overgrowth, and beign sure that she has thick bedding to lay on, or consider getting some elbow pads, high quality ones are available at https://www.dogleggs.com/front-leg-products/ . Hi, yes this is typically a result from lying down/resting on hard surfaces. It is quite raw at present but over the course of time will heal and become a harder surface, might get pigmented too. You could take Charlie to see your vet to get an ointment to aid healing and pad his bedding and resting areas. We use foam mattresses in the hospital for dogs that are recumbent, and they are fairly easy to find, or you could use an extra large duvet filled over. Even if Charli is not recumbent, the soft mattress and bedding will help her too. Hope this helps !

It is difficult to make out what the problem is with the hair around the affected area but from the picture, it looks as though there is a severe hot spot or abscess at the region of the left elbow. If you have no veterinarians near you, I would recommend using a mixture of betadine and saline (mix the two together until you have a light brown mixture) to clean the area. First, you will need to remove the hair from around the wound so that you can treat this properly. Once the hair has been clipped away, I would recommend soaking the elbow in this solution three times daily for 15 minutes each time until resolved. If this does not resolve or worsens, then I would strongly suggest you find a veterinarian that can treat this appropriately. Kaju will likely need an oral antibiotic and anti-inflammatory for further treatment. I hope this helps. Poor Kane! From looking at the picture, it looks like this may be a callus that had broken skin on it or even got infected. I would try to let it dry up and just continue to treat it with the elbow balm. I would try to make him lay on soft bedding. I would also make sure he isn't licking it. You can put a cone collar on him if needed to prevent this. If the wound doesn't heal, there is discharge, or anything worsens, I would strongly recommend to have your vet take a look. He may need some oral antibiotics to help heal it completely. I hope this helps!
