Dog eats constantly but is skinny. Could it be hyperthyroidism?

Hypothyroidism does not usually cause weight loss in dogs, and the test may be caused by euthyroid sick syndrome, meaning the thyroid hormone is low because of some other illness. There are confirmatory tests that can help your vet decide if Milo needs to be on thyroid therapy. If there are no other abnormalities on a CBC and complete blood chemistry, then additional diagnostics may be indicated, including intestinal parasite screen, GI panel, x-rays, abdominal ultrasound, etc. If Milo has a good appetite without vomiting or diarrhea, you could try feeding more calories. I like Purina ProPlan Sport. You could also try puppy food, which is higher in fat. If you do decide to switch food, mix them together slowly over 2-3 weeks to avoid an upset stomach.

This is obviously very abnormal, unfortunately this symptom is very general and could be caused by many diseases including intestinal worms, cancer, IBD, pancreatitis, kidney failure and many more. i recommend taking her ot the vet ASAP in order to get it checked and treated.

He likely has inflammatory bowel disease or some type of malabsorption problem. Keeping him on lifelong steroids (prednisone) is not recommended. The first thing you have to do is get a diagnosis. I recommend he have an abdominal ultrasound and/or x-rays and some blood testing to start with. A fecal test is also a good idea to rule out any intestinal parasites. If you can't afford testing then speak to your vet about doing a trial of Tylosin powder to control IBD symptoms instead of steroids.

If your dog is eating but not gaining weight it could be due to the amount your are feeding or the type of food you are feeding. If you look on the back of the bag it will have feeding instructions for your dog's weight. Also it could be due to how active your dog is. If your dog is very active and plays and runs a lot, it could be burning extra calories causing it to not gain weight. If this is the case you can try feeding an "active" formula food. It could also be due to a thyroid problem or even diabetes. If you think your dog is under weight and can't gain any weight you should have an exam done by a veterinarian to determine if the diet needs to be changed, or if some bloodwork needs to be done to be sure everything is functioning properly.

This could be related to hypothyroidism but it could be caused as well to a completely unrelated gastrointestinal inflammation/infection. I would recommend to have Rooney rechecked by your local veterinarian to control thyroid hormone levels first of all. With hyperthyroidism, the thyroid gland is secreting too much hormone which causes an increase in the pets metabolism and subsequent weight loss. Have your vet check Hopes T4 levels to see if she is hyperthyroid and in need of medication to help stabilize her hormones so that she doesn't continue to waste away. This is easily diagnosed and treated with medication (i.e. Methimazole). Your vet will also want to run baseline bloodwork on your pet to make sure no other disease processes are there.

This usually happens when owners feed their dogs raw chicken and turkey necks. That way dogs ingest lots of thyroid glands and get hyperthyroid. Do not feed raw or cooked chicken or turkey necks to your dog 0r other animal neck meat (trachea/esophagus from the butcher). This should pass if you stop feeding those meats. If you are not feeding this type of food, then your dog may be hyperthyroid ill, and you will need to discuss the treatment with your vet. This could be medication to slow down the thyroid hormone production, surgery to remove the thyroid gland or irradiation of the gland.
