How can I get my dog to eat healthy food when he only wants treats?

Should I wait for my dog to eat his healthy food? He eats all kinds of treats but now won't eat his healthy drive food

Dogs tend to try and hold out on the "healthy" stuff especially if more interesting things such as treats are available. If he is refusing to eat it is best to stop all people food and treats for a day to encourage him to eat his food instead. Most dogs will get hungry enough after a day to give their regular food a try.

That's a tough one and a common trait with dogs. Unfortunately, getting him to not obsess about food is probably not possible. You can ignore it, which may keep him from continually begging. Or, if you feel bad for him, then you can start giving him some low-calorie snack options throughout the day. Some dogs love eating vegetables like celery, green beans and carrots. These are all good, low-calories options to feed him throughout the day. You can also keep him busy by giving him ice cubes to lick and giving toys that you can put small amounts of treats or flavored pastes in. The pet store has a few options for these types of toys.

If you want to curb this behavior you should offer the food you want him to eat and not give treats or more/different food even if he doesn’t eat. As long as he’s otherwise in good health he’ll eat when he’s hungry enough. Some dogs will skip a meal or even two but in general once they realize nothing better is coming they will eat what’s offered.

It sounds like she's trained you to give her the good stuff :) I'd first start with a vet visit to rule out a medical cause (Anxiety, intestinal parasites, an issue with her liver processing nutrients called a liver shunt). If everything is normal, then slowly start weaning her off the treats and on to food. It's ok for her to go a day or two without eating a normal amount while you're transitioning her.

If you are giving Brogan treats and other food (table scraps etc) when she doesn't eat her food it is likely she is just not eating and trying to get something better. I would recomend feeding her dry food only and no treats for a few days. A young healthy dog will not starve themselves. If she is still not eating she may need an exam to make sure she isn't painful. But I suspect she's trying to "train" you into giving her other foods. Dry dog food is what she needs to be healthy with little to no treats.

Tua likely prefers the treats and other food over the dry food. I recommend reducing the bones/meats/treats during the day to get him to eat his dry food. This is to ensure he's getting balanced minerals and vitamins as treats are not meant for maintenance food for dogs unlike formulated dry food.

It is best to mix a small amount of chicken or canned food or chicken broth in with his dry food to encourage him to go back to that. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! A healthy dog will not choice starvation. It sounds like he is trying to train you to give him what he wants. I would hold your ground. Put the meal down, give him an allotted time to eat it and pick it up until the next meal time. It may take 3 days of holding out for him to realize that this is all it will be. No treats until he is eating his food consistently. He could also be out of sorts from you being away and him staying with your family. If he starts acting sick (vomit, diarrhea, etc) or it has been longer than 3 days have your Vet examine him. Also have a talk with your family about feeding expectations and why you don't want things added to his food. Good luck!
