When a dog is dying, are they conscious during their final moments?

First off, I'm so sorry Choko died! It sounds like you were seeing agonal breathing, which can occur right before death. It's a sign the body is not receiving the oxygen it needs, and is indicative of cardiac arrest. More than likely, his heart rate was pretty slow at first so that it was hard to detect, and then Choko entered his final stages of life before passing away. This can happen in animals as they pass away, and I've personally seen it myself. It can be upsetting to see, but it is considering a natural behavior if that makes sense. It doesn't mean he died twice, so you don't have to worry about that. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss, please accept my condolences.

I am so sorry Nat that you had to put Jack to sleep. I work for a home euthanasia company, so I know what it entails quite well. I wasn't there, so I can't say anything for certain, but it may be that he wasn't fully sedated at the time the solution was pushed, or it could have been a natural body reaction to the solution. He may have had what's called agonal breathing, which is normal. I warn owners about the potential of it happening, as it is distressing, but I can assure you it doesn't mean the dog is in distress or feeling anything. I have seen it happen myself. The solution causes no pain to the dog, so I suspect that may be the cause of what you saw. I hope this helps.

Hello. This is a difficult question to answer, but for the most part you might see loss of consciousness, or extreme lethargy/weakness, no appetite, unable to rise to drink, dull mentation or no response to stimuli, pale mucous membranes, labored or very shallow breathing, & a glazed look to the eyes. These would all be indications that death is near. I hope you are not experiencing this with your pet & this is just a curiosity question. First off, I'm so very sorry you lost Lucky so suddenly! How horrible for you, and please accept my condolences for your loss. Yes, it certainly is possible that she was suffering from late stage CHF causing the symptoms you saw when you came home. CHF causes syncope, which is when a dog suddenly passes out due to lack to blood to the brain. Unfortunately without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain, but it is possible. I hope you are doing ok after the loss of your dog, and I hope this helps you!

How horrible for you, please accept my condolences for your loss :-( Please keep in mind that without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain what caused him to pass away, but I can make an educated guess. In senior dogs, heart problems are common, and he could have been suffering from heart failure causing the heavy panting and leading to his death. Unfortunately cancer is also common in senior dogs, especially Labs as a breed, and cancer could have caused him to pass away. Dogs are very stoic with illness, and oftentimes they don't show signs of that illness until they are very sick. Cancer that has spread to the lungs or a primary lung tumor would cause heaving panting and does lead to death. These two diseases would be my top differentials for what caused his death. If you want a definitive answer, you can request your vet do a necropsy (an autopsy for dogs). This would give you some answers. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss.

These are the typical signs of a dog dying, The twitching may just be reflexes, and the mouth opening and closing is the unconscious brain which is not getting oxygen (because the heart already stiopped beating) telling the lungs to breathe. But, at that time the dog is already dead. I am sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry to hear this. Based on her age and breed and what you describe I am worried that she may be bleeding into her abdomen from a tumor on her liver or spleen. If your parents won’t take her to the veterinarian there isn’t much you can do but be with her and pet her gently. You can remind them that neglecting an animal who is suffering is animal cruelty which is illegal. It may remind them that her care is their responsibility. I am glad she has you.
