My Boston Terrier has dry, flaky, itchy skin near tail. What to use?

Itchiness in dogs, especially on the tail or tail base, can be caused by allergies, such as to fleas, food or environmental allergens. Other causes of itchiness include bacterial infections in the skin, mites such as demodex, and/or fungal infections. Please ensure that Cookie is on a consistent flea and tick preventative medication that was prescribed by a veterinarian. Flea medications/treatments that can be purchased from a food or pet store or online are not safe or effective in dogs. The house itself must also be treated for fleas, with very frequent vacuuming and even "flea bombing". If Cookie is already on an appropriate flea medication year round, I recommend having her examined by a veterinarian for an exam and skin scrape to evaluate for the presence of an infection and/or mites. Hello. I do not think the vaccinations caused any problems, it just looks like she has some allergy issues. Unfortunately, it looks like you have a bit of a staph infection on her abdomen & groin region, & just some sensitivities on her chest. Let's try treating her with a good antibacterial shampoo. I like KetoChlor shampoo that you can find on Amazon, Chewy & other sites. Keep the shampoo on for 10 minutes before rinsing & bather her twice a week for the next 3-6 weeks. I would also start her on a good omega 3 fatty acid like Nordic Naturals for dogs. Give this a go for a few weeks & see how it helps her skin. You can give him a cool bath in a hypoallergenic shampoo. That will soothe the skin. You can also give some Benadryl for the itching. There is a section on this website that has information and dosages for common over the counter medications. I’m glad you are taking him in since that’s unusual for a puppy to be that itchy. Breeds like Penelope are prone to skin infections in the folds. If the balms and wipes are not helping, I recommend to have her examined by her veterinarian. She may need an antibiotic or a medicated wipes. Your veterinarian also may carry products for routine cleaning which help to adjust the pH of the skin and this can help prevent infections. Lastly, if she seems itchy, it’s possible she has allergies. It is best to rule out an infection first and foremost. I hope this helps.

There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Hi, It sounds like your dog is having an allergic reaction to something. It could se something in the grass or a small insect bite or many other things. I would monitor him for worsening bumps, vomiting and lethargy. You can bathe him with a steroid shampoo that you can purchase in a pet store, as well as some sprays commercially available for irritated skin. If they are not getting worse, they may just go down in a few days. Make sure you are giving him the proper benedryl dose and this can be given 3 times a day as well. A vet visit is in order if he is not acting right or the bumps get worse. Good luck!
