My old dog drags his leg and falls. What are non-surgical options?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Male | neutered | 13 years and 1 month old | 27 lbs

My Cavalier is 13 y.o. with several health issues that are controlled by medications. He has started dragging one of his back legs. If helped up, he can sometimes get going and walk, but many times he falls and can't get his back end up. He takes Previcox and Glucosamine. We tried a wheelchair but he is too weak to hold it up, and he mostly naps during day, so he needs to be able to lay down. He is too old and has too many heart problems to have surgery. Are there any other options to help him?

Toby is a cute guy! I would recommend to look into physical therapy and alternative therapies such as acupuncture and laser treatments. Often times these therapies will help tremendously. I used these therapies on both my geriatric dogs and I firmly believe they maintained a better quality of life than they would have otherwise. I hope this helps!
