My dog's hip is dislocated. Can it be repaired even if he's active?

We adopted a 4 year old rescue husky mix, who we were told was previously hit by a car and sustained a hip injury. We recently had X-rays done and found out his hip is actually dislocated. Can this be repaired now or is it too late? He seems active and happy

Its hard to know without seeing the X-rays... if the hip is fully dislocated, it would be unusual for him to be fully bearing weight and not showing a significant abnormality in his gait. If it is "sub-luxated," meaning the head of the femur--the "ball" part of the ball and socket joint--is not well seated into the acetabulum--the "socket" part of the ball and socket joint. When the acetabulum/"socket" is very shallow, the hip can be "sub-luxated," and these dogs can continue to seem to have a very normal gait/not show any limp or problem until arthritis becomes problematic with age.
If it is fully dislocated (fully luxated), a surgery called an FHO (femoral head osteotomy) can be considered even weeks after the initial injury. In this surgery, the "ball" part of the ball and socket joint/the head of the femur, is removed surgically, removing the source of pain. The muscles in the area typically do a great job of compensating and allowing these guys to get around quite well.
However, a true REPAIR of a dislocated hip would not be possible if its been weeks or months since the injury. (A true repair of hip dislocation is generally done through a surgery called a toggle pin. ) If a hip dislocation is diagnosed right away, sometimes (about 50% of the time), they can be successfully reduced (put back in place) and we can get them to stay without surgery.

    Without seeing the radiographs I cannot assess the severety of the dislocation. By now it will need to be surgically repaired. One of the problems that could occur is that the muscles involved have atrophied to the point where even with muscle relaxation it may not be possible to reduce the luxation. You need to get a referral to a veterinary orthopedist who will assess the radiographs, and examines your dog. The results of the clinical exam in combination with the interpretation of the radiographs will then determine how the joint can be repaired.

If the hip is out of place it will not heal unless it goes back in place and often times that can’t happen because the soft tissue structures are damaged and unable to hold it in place. He will lose muscle mass from not using that leg and pain can affect their appetite. Can I fix my dog's dislocated hip at home if I can't afford a vet?
No, this cannot be fixed at home, this requires a veterinarian immediately. Only a veterinary professional can fix this, and if you attempted to treat it yourself, you could do great harm and pain to Murfy. I would see if you can borrow money from family and friends to afford the vet, and I can give you some resources that may help. You can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. My dog broke her hip. What's the best way to help her recover?
Hip dysplasia means that the dog has poor hip conformation, with the ball of the femur not tight into the hip joint. Due to the joint looseness arthritis usually develops as the dogs age. A hip joint fracture sounds more like it was from a specific injury. With rest a hip fracture should heal over six weeks but if the hip joint is involved then Jenny may get hip arthritis and pain in her hip. Heat will relax her muscles and increase the blood supply to heal the fracture so it is a good thing to do. Please keep her in a small area and take her out only to the bathroom for a month. My dog has hip dysplasia, but isn't in pain. Do I need surgery?
Hello, sorry to hear about Shiro. He does indeed have hip dysplasia as is evident in his x-rays. This diseases does indeed require surgical correction, but only if Shiro seems to be in discomfort. Hip Dysplasia results in secondary osteoarthritis which in the long term can impact your pets ability to walk and overall comfort. There are two different procedures with regards to surgery, an FHNO were we remove the femoral head and neck or a total hip replacement were we replace the ball and joint with metal implants as they do in humans. Ultimately, the best contributor to decreasing osteoarthritis in dogs is by maintaining an overall low weight and lean body condition score. Obese pets with hip dysplasia tend to do worse. Now, with regards to surgery, it does not need to occur now, typically with either surgery, we want pets to be fully developed so that their bones are fully grown and they have developed all of the musculature. I would recommend asking your veterinarian to refer you to an orthopedic surgeon who may be able to better assist you with Shiro's hips dysplasia. Hope this helps and best of luck.

My dog limps after old injury. Is his good hip at risk of damage?
If your dog is consistently limping when he walks I would be concerned about some permanent damage he sustained after being hit. He may have had something like a pelvic fracture that did not heal properly. This could cause issues in the long run because it will put increased stress and strain on his other hip. The likelihood of him developing arthritis in this injured hip is much more likely as well. I would recommend taking Duke to see your vet and have X-rays performed. To get very good X-rays he may need to be sedated. Your vet can determine from the X-rays if there is anything that can be done to help allieviate the problem. It would be wise to get Duke started on a joint supplement and to keep him at a good, healthy and trim weight since excess weight can cause more joint problems. I hope this helps. Hello. It actually does sound like a dislocated hip. If it were an abscess or infection, it should have either healed or ruptured by now. If this is a dislocated hip, it is not life-threatening, but it will never heal to be a normal hip, either. There are options to seek veterinary help. CareCredit & Scratchpay are same as cash payment options allowing you to pay out a medical bill without incurring fees. You can see if your town or county has any kind of low cost veterinary care ( call the closest Humane Society ), sometimes churches & other civic groups will help with veterinary care, and try starting a GoFundMe page. If all this is unavailable to you, keeping Zuco indoors will be important. At some point, the joint will probably freeze, but it will never be a normal mobile joint & it will always be painful. He will probably always limp on it. Finally, you could relinquish him to a no-kill shelter where he will get the proper care he needs & hopefully find another forever home.
