My pet has diarrhea. Can I give unflavored Pedialyte for dehydration?

Yes, pedialyte is safe for use in dogs. Common causes of diarrhea in dogs include food intolerance or allergies, intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, bacterial or viral infection, stress colitis, autoimmune disease, systemic disease (liver, kidney, pancreas, diabetes), among others. You can withhold food for 12-24 hours, and then start her back on small amounts of her normal food, or you can give her boiled chicken breast, cooked white rice, or cooked eggs. However, if the diarrhea continues for another 24 hours, or if Jade start vomiting or does not seem interested in eating, she should be evaluated by a veterinarian. The vet may recommend diagnostics like an internal parasite screen or bloodwork to try to figure out what is going on.

You may try offering a small amount (1/8 of a cup) several times daily. Vomiting can be rapidly dehydrating in young small puppies, so it can be hard to correct dehydration alone with oral liquids. I don’t recommend to give any flavored Pedialyte as it can cause further stomach upset and some of them may contain a toxic sweetener called xylitol. When pets have diarrhea beyond two days, they need to be examined by the veterinarian as shifts in the bacterial flora tend to occur and will continue the diarrhea regardless of the initial cause. Continuing diarrhea can be a sign of many different disease conditions. Bring in a sample of stool for testing. I hope this helps.

You can give about 5-10mls every hour with a syringe. Dilute the unflavored PediaLyte with equal parts water. You can also leave the 50/50 solution out in a bowl for her to drink when shebwants. You can try a short fast, about 12 hours, followed by a bland diet fed in small,frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Transition slowly to her regular diet afterwards. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, persistent diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.

Poor guy. Yes you sure can give him Pedialyte but only the non-flavored kind diluted 50:50 with water. You can use a syringe or small turkey baster to given it to him if he doesn't take it readily. Pedialyte is a balanced electrolyte replacement solution that has sodium, potassium & chloride, & sometimes high amounts of glucose (sugar). It is used primarily in humans, but can be utilized in other species, especially dogs & cats. Since there is no balanced electrolyte solutions for reptiles, if you decide to use some for your reptile, then make sure it is unflavored. You can give her unflavored pedialyte. I can also give you a home remedy for Imelda. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.
