My dog has severe diarrhea and won't eat. Is it time for euthanasia?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Springer Spaniel | Male | neutered | 9 years and 4 months old | 45 lbs

Our Springer was diagnosed with lymphangiectasia after eliminating threw other tests. He will not eat the IBD foods or the home cooked recipes. He will eat cooked meats for a few days and then refuse them. We have not been able to stop the diarrhea and he has had an ultrasound but the intestines are so enlarged they couldn't see the liver. Would it be kinder to euthanize after are not being able to stop the symptoms?

I'm sorry to hear Max is suffering from lymphangiectasia. This can be a very debilitating condition. Currently is diarrhea his only symptom or is he vomiting and losing weight? Has your vet started him on other medicines along with the diet change? If you feel that Max's quality of life has deteriorated, and with your vet's help you've exhausted all the common therapies, then euthanasia may be a valid decision. I would urge you to consider having a consultation with an internal medicine specialist if you haven't done so already, just to ensure you have tried all possible treatments before making that final decision. I am so sorry you are going through this.
