My dog is depressed after a companion died. Should I get a new one?

Hello i think my dog is super depressed after her companion died. She saw the corpse, because its a nartural death due to old age (14). She is not eating, and always looking and sniffing at the places my other dog used to be. Is this possible for dogs to be depressed? I dont think anything is wrong with her, she is very healthy. Should i get a new dog?

Hi. Yes, just like people, pets can become depressed for a period of time after a loss or change. Getting another pet is totally a personal decision. If that's what she has been used to, it is definitely an option. If you aren't ready, or not wanting another pet, she will adjust.

Hi, I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your dog. I am sure that JC missing her friend dearly. Dogs can truly be "out of sorts" after the loss of a good friend as well. Things are different for her and it is showing in her behavior. I may wait just a bit before getting a new dog. Allow JC quality time with you alone, and then I am sure she will be ready for a new friend very soon.

So sorry for the loss of your older dog.

All I can say on the subject of getting another dog is that you know Teddy best. If you know that he loves other dogs then it may be nice to get him a friend. Be sure to get a dog that will fit into your lifestyle. Puppies can be a lot of work with training, etc. so you may want to consider an "older" puppy (closer to a year old or so) that may already have that training in place. Whatever you think will work with your family.

Yes dogs can grieve and get lonely. Most dogs enjoy having company so getting another dog could be a good idea if you have the time and energy for another dog. You may consider a rescue dog, that way you can try them together and make sure Rosie likes the new dog and they get along. Young puppies can be very annoying to a grown dog and Rosie may not adjust well especially as you will need to spend more time with a puppy and may inadvertently neglect giving Rosie the time with you that she needs. Fostering a dog also is a good option as you can help a dog in need and if it's not a good fit for you and Rosie it will leave when it finds the right home. Many people keep the foster dog after they get to know them and they settle into the home. A puppy can be a good solution too if done right and it would certainly get Rosie up and playing again! My dog is depressed after losing her friend. How can I help her cope?

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your pup. Depression and mourning are very normal in dogs, especially after the loss of a close companion. It may be that Aysha needs some more time to mourn, and some extra attention, care and loving would help. Sticking to a schedule can also help her return to a more normal routine. If she is still having lots of issues, speaking with a local vet or veterinary behaviorist to see if medication would be helpful may also be beneficial for her.

I'm very sorry you had to put your dog down, please accept my condolences for your loss. It sounds like Ginger may be grieving the loss of her companion, and when you feel ready, it's fine to get another dog. I would wait until you are ready to welcome another dog into the home, and there's no time limit on that. Whenever you feel comfortable. I hope this helps!

Should I get a new puppy to help my older dogs cope with loss?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Great question. I think this depends on how well they all get along. If you screen the new dog properly and do a meet and greet, and they all end up being great companions, I think it's a great idea and shows you are thinking ahead. A death of a companion can be very devastating not only for humans but for the other pets in the house. Having another pet around would hopefully distract from and provide some relief when one of your other dogs passes. I think if you are ready for another dog and are willing to take on the financial aspect of it, it's a great idea. Best of luck with you and I hope you have many good years left with all of them.

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Princess may be a bit depressed due to the departure of the other dog. This is fairly common in these scenarios. However, it is very likely that she will normalize soon perhaps in a few days. One thing you can do is entice her appetite by adding things like pieces of chicken or beef to her food for a few days just to encourage her to eat. If there is no improvement in the next few days then have her examined by your veterinarian to ensure there is not a medical reason to explain this. Good luck!

How to help my dog losing weight and acting sad after a pet died?

A decrease appetite and lethargy are common after the passing of a housemate as they go through a depression. The best thing is to have her checked by a vet to make sure there are no medical problems that can cause this and then they can add medication to help her handle the depression if needed. You can always try special food and treats such as boiled chicken and rice or chicken broth to the diet if she is just eating less to see if that encourages her more.
