My puppy has dental calculus despite treats. Should I take him to vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 26 days old | 26 lbs

Hi,I give my puppy dental treats everyday, and I put the Tropiclean mouth wash into his water foundation. But he still has dental calculus on both sides of his teeth. Is this serious? Do I need to take him to the vet? Thank you so much!

The amount of tartar is relatively minimal. It likely doesn't require a veterinary visit at this time. If he will allow brushing, use a pet approved toothbrush and toothpaste daily. This will slow the progression. In my own experience (unrelated to Petco or Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach), water additives do very little to prevent tartar buildup.
