My 9lb Pom has chronic cough. Can he take Delsym safely?

Delsym can be used in dogs, however you should call your veterinarian to obtain a safe dose. Do not medicate your pet without the advice of your vet. Additionally, cardiac disease should be ruled out since you have an older dog. This will require a physical exam along with chest xrays and/or an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart).

If Dyamond is coughing, your safest plan is to take her to a vet for an exam. Dogs cough for a wide variety of reasons (heart disease, heartworm disease, kennel cough, viruses, pneumonia, etc.), and cough suppressants can make many conditions worse. Hi there. It would be best for you to take Coco to your vet for an exam if she is coughing. Coughing could be due to parasites, viruses, bacteria, fungus, asthma, etc. When you treat with cough syrup you are only placating the symptoms, not treating the underlying disease process. That being said, you can give Bisolvan but I would not use Linctus. You should use Bisolvan Chesty. The active ingredient is bromhexine - the Linctus has another ingredient (orciprenaline) which is a bronchodilator and that could cause the excessive panting you are seeing. Those bronchodilators really increase heart rate and respiratory rate and can be unsafe unless used properly. At 4 pounds it is likely she was overdosed. So, if you are going to use Bisolvan, use the Chesty variety. The dose is 2mg/kg twice a day - she could have about 4 mg. That equals about 5ml of Chesty syrup or 1 TEASPOON which she can take twice a day. Again, it is best to take her to your vet to figure out why she is coughing. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Citirizine is an antihistamine that can be helpful if a dog has some allergies or even mild airway irritation. If Shero is coughing so much that he is bringing up phlegm and mucus I would start to worry about a respiratory infection that may need treatment with antibiotics. In these little tiny puppies I tend to treat more aggressively since their immune systems are not fully mature and they can't always fight off infections or other illnesses. I also worry that little sick dogs and cats can become hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) if they are not able to keep down their food. This can happen if a puppy is coughing and regurgitates his stomach contents a few too many times. I would get Shero back to a veterinarian since his signs are worsening. They may recommend bloodwork and possibly chest radiographs. I hope this helps!

There are many things that can cause coughing in dogs, and treatment will depend on what the underlying problem is. Because of this, if Asher is coughing enough that you feel he needs medication, I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam. He/she can listen to his heart and lungs, and may recommend chest x-rays or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem. If he has a condition that cough syrup would be useful for, your vet will recommend a specific product to use, or may prescribe a cough syrup specifically for dogs if necessary.

You can discuss with your vet if this is safe to give him, and they can give you the dose information.

Poor Teddy! The most common cause of a chronic cough in a papillion is due to a collapsing trachea. Sometimes products like Robitussin can help, but there are other causes of coughing - specifically heart disease or bronchitis that should be ruled out by having a chest xray performed. Legally I cannot give dosing information for Robitussin to you unless I have performed a physical exam on Teddy. There are better medication options if his vet does confirm a collapsing trachea is the cause of his cough.
