My dog is dehydrated. Is giving Pedialyte rectally safe or effective?

There are many causes of dehydration and given her symptoms, I would recommend having her blood tested to rule out kidney disease or any other systemic diseases / infections. She will likely need a course of subcutaneous fluids, which is when fluid is administered under the skin and absorbed by the body. This is an effective way to hydrate an animal and is well tolerated. Poor guy. Yes you sure can give him Pedialyte but only the non-flavored kind diluted 50:50 with water. You can use a syringe or small turkey baster to given it to him if he doesn't take it readily. You can give him as much as he will take readily (probably around 20cc's) and offer it every 4 hrs or so. Poor guy I hope Oliver feels better soon. Take care.

Pedialyte is a balanced electrolyte replacement solution that has sodium, potassium & chloride, & sometimes high amounts of glucose (sugar). It is used primarily in humans, but can be utilized in other species, especially dogs & cats. Since there is no balanced electrolyte solutions for reptiles, if you decide to use some for your reptile, then make sure it is unflavored. Yes, pedialyte is safe for use in dogs. Common causes of diarrhea in dogs include food intolerance or allergies, intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, bacterial or viral infection, stress colitis, autoimmune disease, systemic disease (liver, kidney, pancreas, diabetes), among others. You can withhold food for 12-24 hours, and then start her back on small amounts of her normal food, or you can give her boiled chicken breast, cooked white rice, or cooked eggs. However, if the diarrhea continues for another 24 hours, or if Jade start vomiting or does not seem interested in eating, she should be evaluated by a veterinarian. The vet may recommend diagnostics like an internal parasite screen or bloodwork to try to figure out what is going on.

I don’t recommend to give any flavored Pedialyte as it can cause further stomach upset and some of them may contain a toxic sweetener called xylitol. When pets have diarrhea beyond two days, they need to be examined by the veterinarian as shifts in the bacterial flora tend to occur and will continue the diarrhea regardless of the initial cause. Continuing diarrhea can be a sign of many different disease conditions. Bring in a sample of stool for testing. I hope this helps.

You may try offering a small amount (1/8 of a cup) several times daily. Vomiting can be rapidly dehydrating in young small puppies, so it can be hard to correct dehydration alone with oral liquids. Yes, pedialyte is good to give in cases of diarrhea, a probiotic/fiber supplement such as fortiflora is also very helpful. Profuse diarrhea, additional vomiting and any fever or lethargy would require a full check up by your vet
