Dog has dark blotchy patches on belly, licking: Is it an infection?

This looks like a mild bacterial skin infection. Dogs can get this from laying on damp ground. Often it will go away on its own. You can bathe the area with antibacterial shampoo once or twice weekly to help it heal more quickly. Since she’s not bothered by it I’m not overly concerned. These red/flakey patches often occur due to a bacterial or fungal infection. It's also possible that this is due to ringworm (a fungal infection). It's best to get it diagnosed by a veterinarian, because ringworm can spread to different parts of the body and can spread to people. Also, the more involved the infection, the longer it will take to clear. For now, I recommend washing your hands anytime you touch Lucky. I recommend cleaning his belly with a medicated wipe or shampoo (can get this at the pet store) once a day until the skin appears normal. If it seems to get worse, or not better within a week, then you'll want to take Lucky into the vet for an exam. It could be a local bacterial infection, fungal infection or inflammation. You would need to have Lily physically examined by your veterinarian for a definitive diagnosis and for treatment. If she is licking at it, place an e-collar (cone) on her. Keep the area clean and dry until she sees the vet.

Heidi could have a contact allergy given that this is mostly on her underside. She may also have a skin infection or yeast infection that is causing itching as well. Sometimes a medicated pet shampoo or an oatmeal-based pet shampoo is helpful. However if you do the bathing route and it does not clear up within a couple days she should be evaluated by her veterinarian. This is because with her age a low thyroid gland activity could cause the skin lesions to appear. If that is the case then giving her a daily thyroid supplement would help.

You will need to take your dog to a veterinarian for a skin exam. Your dog could be suffering from an allergy, mites, fleas, a bacterial or fungal infection. each of these requires a different treatment, so it is important to find out what is causing the itch. Your vet will do a thorough exam and maybe a a skin scrape. He will then discuss the options with you and then prescribe medications, possibly give an injection to stop the itching.
