Why is my dog crying when touched and limping on her back leg?

Poor Lily. When a pet isn't showing a pain response but limping on their back leg, it could indicate that they have either torn a ligament in the joint or have a severe muscle sprain. Also if you don't notice any obvious swelling, then a fracture is likely not the cause. Rest her, no running, jumping playing and leash walk only for the next couple of weeks. You can also do cold compresses on the limb 1-2 times a day. if there is no improvement within 3-4 days, then it's best to get her seen by your veterinarian for a full exam and pet friendly pain medication. She may also need x-rays of the leg to determine the underlying injury (cause). Do not give her people pain meds however because these can be quite toxic to pets and cause major liver and/or kidney damage. It's better to get all pain and anti-inflammatory meds from your vet. Even though she isn't crying out, there is presumed inflammation at the very least, so she can benefit from medication at any time. I hope your puppy gets well soon. Best wishes.

Poor Scobie! It is difficult to say exactly what can be wrong with her leg from the photo. Pain can be caused by fractures, nerve damage, or joint issues. I can see from the photo that Scobie’s belly is very big and she is pretty thin. She should be seen by a vet right away to determine what is going on and begin the appropriate treatment.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lazy! She does sound very painful! She likely has hurt her back, hips or tail. The fact she cries out when you touch her there and when trying to get up indicates back end pain. Some dogs with anal gland issues or Lyme disease can show similar symptoms. I would have her seen today by your Vet before the weekend. They will very likely on physical exam be able to tell where she hurts. If she is otherwise acting normal, I would give her strict rest for 24-48 hours to see if that improves her lameness. This means no running, jumping or playing. Take her outside on a leash to go potty and bring her straight back inside. Allowing her body to rest will resolve most mild causes of lameness. Small breed dogs can be prone to neck and/or back pain which can be excruciating to them. These dogs will commonly cry when picked up. The veterinarian will examine her and try to determine the source of her pain. She may also need bloodwork and possibly x-rays. From there, treatment can be started. Hello, I am sorry to hear about Pablo. Limping can be caused by many different things in dogs. It can be something such as a strained or sore muscle from rough playing; or could be a sign of a torn ligament/tendon or broken bone. Sometimes infections can also make dogs limp. If you feel that Pablo is in pain I would recommend having him evaluated by a veterinarian so that they can examine his leg and prescribe pain medications. Depending on their findings they may also suggest taking x rays of his leg. In the meantime I would recommend rest for Pablo, no running/jumping or playing off leash, to prevent further aggravation of the injury. Hope this helps!

Sorry to here that Kemo is having some troubles. There are many things that can cause pain in dogs. Some of them include trauma, degenerative diseases, inflammatory conditions, spinal issues, cancers, clotting disorders, and some others that are less common. In a small breed dog of about six years, my top two differentials would be some sort of traumatic event (that could have happened when you were not around) or an issue with the back. Many times when dogs are lifted and they yelp, it is a spinal problem causing some pretty severe discomfort. If you have ever had back pain yourself, you know just how uncomfortable this can be. Based on the severity and progression of the problems, I would say that Kemo definitely needs a visit to the vet sometime soon. They will be able to perform a thorough physical, and based on the findings, determine if x-rays are warranted. They will be able to target what part of the body requires x-rays. There are many medications available to treat inflammatory conditions and trauma, as well as pain associated with the back and spine.
